Another to add to William's good list of tips: Have a suitably sized tool for the task.

It works to use an all-purpose router for all tasks, but using a compact/trim router for small round-over tasks makes the entire process much easier (just as having a monster in the table makes doing raised panels easier). Maintaining balance, yours and the tools, applying pressure in the right places, etc. all becomes easier, assuming your compact router is easy to grip.

That said I have 3 similarly sized routers - and just discovered the benefits of a compact/trim router. I don't do a lot of router work though.

I have another important tip for hand held router work, probably forgotten because I discovered this one by a different path than most others:

If you've built a bench-on-bench for dovetailing or other up-close hand tool work, it makes an excellent platform for hand-held router work as well.
