I gather that the part of the market that really demands good work is pretty thin.

Paraphrasing something that Warren said when Bill brought up a Cartouche award piece, there are far more makers capable of that kind of work than there are customers who will pay for it.

For 30 years, my mother has painted and sold about $25K a year (perhaps more - not her main job, just a side income) of stuff that I don't think anyone with much taste would touch, but a lot of people making nicer things have come and gone and her market is still strong. She's capable of making nicer things.

Like the bowl guy you talk about, she knows her market and she's more interested in meeting the market's demands and figuring out what's profitable than she is about a pie in the sky chase of the best work she could do.
