OT--trapping skunks
Wiley Horne
>Hello All,
Looking for advice from those experienced in trapping skunks. Now I already know the sensible thing is to get out the yellow pages and look under pest control. But I would like to buy a trap and catch my skunk(s), and then call Animal Control in the morning to come get it. They said they will, but they want the trap covered when they arrive, so the officer doesn't get sprayed. Well, that kinda gives me pause, because I don't want to get sprayed either. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let me back up....
First off, what is the best size and type of trap for a skunk? Havahart traps for skunks are mostly 7" x 7" in cross section--other sites say you want a larger cross section. Seems like the smallest cross-section the animal will enter is best. But what is it? Anybody have a favorite trap?
Also, what's the best bait so you attract the skunk, but don't find the neighborhood cat in the trap in the morning? I read peanut butter on bread, and somebody even said vanilla wafers. (Got milk?)
What about getting a cover over the trap? Some traps are sold with water proof covers. Some traps are solid, so he can't getcha. Others say to walk up carefully and drop a sheet or towel over the trap. Would like to hear from someone who has done this before.
Any and all other advice appreciated.
