I used to live in Cambridge, Maryland. I met a man called Todd Hughes, who lived 30 miles up the road, and who eventually made me a froe. We also went to a few old tool shows.
One of them, at York, Penn (I think), was where I found a little book called The Homestead Builder: Practical Hints for Handy-men by CP Dwyer.
Well, anyhow, the froe got used to split a few hundred shakes. Small and lightweight, but I could raise my arms at the end of 3 hours without grief, and it fits neatly into a frame pack! Thanks Todd!
The book details construction with rammed earth, wood and adobe, and though we were working with cob, the materials are the same or similar. Wish we'd had the cow Dwyer mentions for trampling the straw into the clay mud.
