Denis, I am speachless, ...... I have been wanting to come to Rosewood, even this summer until my hip issue came up. One of my good friends is scheduled to take a class there next week, we had planned on taking it together.

I don't know what will happen now, but I do hope that Ted finds a way to get it going again.....I am very sad to read about this news .... every one I have known who has been there has loved the whole experience.

I had the good fortune of going to the Furniture conference they held last year, and it was AWESOME. Great people, beautiful scenery. I was really looking forward to going back in '08. Again, I hope they can make it work out.

>I want to echo what others have said. I took four one-week courses there and was looking forward to taking others. I'll continue to treasure all I learned there, and the pleasure of vacationing in Almonte. But I'll miss not being able to go there again.

Tell me about it. I'm a squeaky clean person who tries to act like a guest, every time I am in the US, I am scrupulous with their laws, never speed, I have no criminal record, current or having been expunged and maybe 2 speeding tickets in Canada my whole life. So far 5 trips across the border in about 10 years. The first of these got me nailed for lying to the border guard which was based on his incorrect guess as to my declaration based on his interpretation of Canadian laws he thought I might be avoiding. He contacted the Can border where it was set straight, but he figured something was up so he charged me with a false declaration. Even his regional office tried to talk him out of it. I was working as a VP with a 6 figure salary at the time that could have been pissed away by his whim if it had got any worse. In fairness he was exercising his judgment. I can't claim he was wrong in his duty, if wrong in his judgment. The was pre 9/11.

Last night I crossed the border and was nailed with a Misdemeanor charge, for something that seems to have accumulated traffic court wise based on "my" speeding in '06, possibly in Manhattan. I have only been to NYC twice, @ '77, or '85, never in my vehicle. Last time I crossed the border was in '02. Same goes for my truck. It was a Japanese Tool Seminar in '02. So far, since last night, it's cost me 1500 bucks. I was going to pick up an ebay purchase. The Misdemeanor Ticket I got, that was given me by an State Trouper who was courteous, helpful, and professional (true of the BP guys also), is itself not accurately filled out given variances in our respective code systems. So how these problems might manifest is not hard to see. But I'm in a deep hole digging my way out with money I don't have. I'm lucky not to be in jail tonight.

It just seems that I have admired, to speak only of our stuff that we hold together, American craftsmen, publications, tools etc... I feel like a moth drawn to a lamp, then Zaap! It has been a major mistake. This has nothing to do with being anti American, it's the opposite. I love to visit. The border and the data sharing just aren't working for me, anyway. You aren't safe either.

Yeah, I realize my problems are minor, I'm grateful for that.

Took 15 minutes of playing dumb, but kept me out of jail. Quit working for that outfit after that trip, there were many straws on the camel's back, but the prospect of spending even a night in a Mexican jail for someone else's laziness was just too much.

Sorry to hear about your troubles... the recent even could have something to do with the guy with TB coming back through Canada, I suspect that a lot of officers are being a bit more picky after that.

All the NY guys were very nice, I seem to play reasonably well at the border, I just get screwed for no reason. The way the border works is that you cross into the US, Canada, or elsewhere. While in general I know the rules of what I can or can't do, I certainly don't know them all, and if something is wrong, you have actually broken that law by your mere presence. So in my case there is a bogus didn't appear, and didn't pay ticket out for me. I wasn't in the US at the time, and I didn't get any info relative to the court dates etc... The only way I found out is by driving a few hundred yards into the US, which is a misdemeanor. Now I have a must appear court date. I have no drivers license and I certainly don't feel I can safely cross the border... Since I got kicked out for traffic, I really don't know if I would have passed into the US otherwise.

I appreciate your geologist story, John. As you say, a US jail would be a picnic, in fact, that may be where I should book future US vacations, since other accomodation is apparently out of my reach. I'll have to see if the AAA rates them, like maybe it would be better to cross into Vermont, than a state with an Attica.

I really like NH, and I hear NM is a very beautiful state also.

Crossed and recrossed the Canadian border pre 9/11 several times. Always asked how long are you staying and told to "have a safe and happy trip". Jamaca twice, paperwork on the plane and then wait in long lines that move fast - "no problem mon" & "smooth running mon".

Mexico at least seven trips and never so much as a boo. Italy and Netherlands no problems either.

That's a horrible story, and worse, one that is still in motion. Maybe the attorneys could chip in with some information. Here's a thought, and I'll quickly add I haven't been in your situation before. But this is something I would do, especially if I were short of money to hire a law firm with offices in US and Canada...

Before the trail gets cold, get in touch with the appropriate Canadian-side Highway Patrol unit, and try to find someone in that organization who is routinely coordinating matters with their Highway Patrol counterparts on the US side. It might be that this kind of thing happens a good many times along a 3,000 mile border, and if so, you might get some guidance about the best way to proceed. Or perhaps you can find out some particulars on what you are supposed to have done, and when, and where. Maybe the case of mistaken identity can be uncovered quickly, if only there is some US liaison office within Canadian law enforcement.

In fact, you might call the US-side Highway Patrol unit who wrote you up, and try to find out more from them. Highway Patrol folks tend to be pretty courteous and reasonable wherever you find them, in my experience.

Though really it's all a clerical eror, and probably would have had to happen to anyone else regardless of demeanor.

I have some relief from the initial ticket, though I may still have to go to court on the misdemeanor. Apparently there is a guy with a different middle initial in Connecticut, who is in for a surprise the next time someone runs his licence. Apparently this stuff happens all the time according to the State employees I was talking to. I think I'm just on a run of luck, but like anything else it's a numbers game and one can be lucky for a long time, and then not lucky for a while. I would be even more concerned if I had a more comon name.
