Mk ll Honing Guide/ashley Isles

>I finally bought the MK II Honing guide and found that the ease of bevel setting was great but with the narrow tops of the Ashley chisels, my 1/2" chisel kept twisting out of square.
I did a search because I thought I remembered reading a work around for this problem but I couldn't find it.
Others had a similar problem didn't they?

>If I understand what is happening. There does seem to be a problem with the brass roller on some of the MK II honing guide's. When a plane blade, which is obviously wider and steadier then your chisel, is squared in the honing guide with the registration guide and placed on a flat surface, where the blade makes contact will appear flat across it's edge. When the micro-bevel adjustment is set, one edge of the blade sometimes lifts. I have seen this with a number of different blades. This behavior does not happen with every guide, but I have found it in a number of them. I think that because the roller is no longer a solid piece of brass, as was the MK I's roller, there is a problem with the way the axle is held in place at the ends of the roller.
One given solution is to simply apply more finger pressure on one side of the blade.

This is a well documented problem that still has no solution. The jig manufacturer blames the chisels, but I have found that even beautifully machined LN chisels are easily dislodged from square in this jig. My solution is that I don't use or recommend the MkII for chisel honing.
The roller problem that you site is new to me, and I would appreciate reports about what you find. I'm not sure I understand the symptoms that you describe. All that happens when the roller is adjusted is the axel center is moved in an eccentric. Also specify if you are using the standard roller or the cambered roller.
