I was asked my opinion of it a while ago.

This is the steel that they use in the paper mills to cut paper to size and trim the edges of the paper.

It's a 12%Cr (from memory) alloy that's loaded up with carbon, so it has large carbides which are brittle and sharpen with some difficulty. I thought that it would prove problematic in service, especially if it hit a knot or similar.

I thought that they'd sharpen, but with difficulty and require a fairly steep sharpening angle, but apparently the blades are working well.

However, I hit the post button too early

Oh well - off to work on a Sunny Thursday morning - approx 60F at 6:30am and a nice, mild 90F forecast for today.

I have both, as well as Holtey S (powder metallurgy)& E type.

I have not compared exhaustively, as Steve Elliott has done, just lacking the CPMV3 and a nice flat ground lump or two of cast iron........... but serious comparative tests are very arduous and time consuming, I do not have the kit,the time or the patience for any more of this kind of testing....

This seems to be a very emotive subject and many prefer to carry on the old ways of Arkansas and carbon steel.

Those who have the inclination will find Paul Williams' blades are superb.

They do appear to sharpen well (using SiC and CrO), and are more durable than A2, not as durable as CPM 3V.

As Andrew F suggested, there may be some issues wiith larger carbides. In the photomicrographs, the edge looks a little bumpy at the end of the test - it is not wearing as evenly as other blades. However, this is probably not something you would be able to detect by feeling the wood. (I dont recall noticing any roughness).
