OT - standard for 1-2" micrometer

>I picked up a Starrett micrometer, 1-2" range, a while back - anything special about making a 1" standard for it? Can I just cut a chunk of 1/4" bolt and file the ends until it measures 1" with my (also Starrett) 0-1" mike?

>I had Dad make mine. Think he said as long as it was hardened you can do as you please. That is as long as its for "in-house" use. If you start dealing with "vendors" and "suppliers" you might want to have them "calibrated"(checked). I did quality profesionaly for awhile. Had to hire in the pro for certification. Now, out here in the shop, I don't worry about it. As long as everything goes off one (mine !) standard. You'rre the King on your "domain" !

>Dunno about filing to a thou tolerance - but you might just use something like 240 grit SiC when you're getting close.
Of course (technically) this just calibrates one mic to another, but that's probably close enough for most shop purposes.
IIRC the standards can be bought.

Also give a ball bearing a try. Pick one up that has an OD between 1"-2"...they are inexpensive and the outside diameters are acurate to at least 4 decimal places.
