>I don't know the details that make this plane worthy of this bid but it is a very early Bedrock 4 1/2 and may be rare enough to be restoreable. The broken frog is the biggest drawback:-( JR

>Sure, Joe, that's exactly it. I missed that it was a "1/2". I was thinking it was a 604. The one with the broken frog makes it equivalent to this one at $150. Still: Gosh.

>The 604-1/2 is a very good plane, and this one could be fixed up to work fine and look better than the 604-1/2 that I paid $75 for a couple years back. Of course, I have placed 3rd in two competitions with that plane now so that makes the plane worth about $300 I think ? The way I see it the frog is not broken, just missing the lateral adjust. The lateral adjust lever on Bailey style planes just plain sucks anyway, you are better off using a small hammer to make lateral adjustments. Still, I wouldn't have paid more than $20 for that plane I think, but then I don't know much about planes.

>A #4 or #4 1/2 from the same era would make an excellent donor of adjuster, tote and knob, genetically indistinguishable from the original equipment on the much more valuable #604 1/2. Those replacement parts, some discreet rust removal and a bit of pontypool could result in a Frankenplane that could successfully pass the handplane olympic drug tests and bring $400 to $500 from a serious collector.
Personally, I'd prefer a L-N 25th aniversary special bedrock, even with freely acknowledged cryogenic steroids, A2 steroids, magnesium bronze steroids, and genetically enhanced amphibious steroids. It's purdier, works better, and comes NIB, with impeccable provenance.

>My guess is that this Bedrock is an uncommon type 1 or 2 from 1898-99 and is numbered 4-1/2, not 604-1/2, and has the milled off 2nd patent date. One of that description in far better shape sold last month for $275 on the 'bay. Still doesn't seem worth it to me.
