OT... Toilet problem

>The WC (no not wood central) is not making a complete flush. It kinda swirls around but never completely flushes. Everything looks OK inside the tank. Could the wax seal be leaking? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

>If the wax seal was leaking you would know, believe me.

First buy or borrow a GOOD closet auger and make absolutley sure there isn't something in the toilet's trap that is causing the problem.

If that checks out okay....

You say everything in the tank is okay but check this anyway. 1. Is the flapper staying up until the tank is more or less drained? Sometimes for various reasons the flapper will drop down too soon and not allow a suffcient amount of water to leave the tank. 2. Is the tank filling up all the way? Sometimes the fill valve will get out of adjustment and shut off the water coming into the tank before there is enough to let the toilet flush properly. This is particularly true of newer toilets that are marginal in the ammount of water used to begin with. 3. How hard is your water? Sometimes the under side of the bowl will get clogged with lime buildup and prevent the toilet from flushing properly.

If all these thing check out okay check the soil stack. If it is clogged it will stop the toilet from flushing.

Addy protocol:I was a maintenance man in a 160 bed nursing home for over four years. There ain't much that can happen to a john I haven't seen.

>Scott, I would bet you have an old cheap rubber flapper valves that's not balanced right for some reason. You need a wood one. Cocobolo is good because of the oiliness of the wood and has just the right buoyancy. They are not too common, so you might have to make your own. Lignum vitae is excellent in water, though it's denser than water and sinks, and might result in the problem you describe.....ahh maybe that's the problem. Check and see if someone made a flapper valve out of lignum vitae and replace it at once.

happy flushing,

Dave

>Many toilets have a hole down in the bottom of the bowl that feeds a spurt of water to start the siphon effect for flushing. If the water swirls around but never builds up to the point that you worry about it running over, look to see whether that hole is clogged. One of our toilets suffers from this right now - it's due to a buildup of lime from our highly mineralized water - and I need to get in there and ream it out.

Alternatively, depending on the age of the toilet (and thus how much water it uses) and the fatness of your wallet, you may be bettah off with a new toilet. Our other toilet is a pressure-flush (air pressure) toilet that scares the hairs off the cats, but sure flushes effectively, at only 1.5 gallons of water.

Ok, with a little more seriousness...

>than last night.... Take the lid off and flush it. The flapper valve is suppose to come up allowing the water to flow out, and not go down until the water level in the reservoir tank is nearly empty. From your description I suspect your flapper valve goes down too early or else there is an obstruction in the main water drainage of the reservoir tank. If your toilet was made in the last couple of decades, it's probably pretty easy to find a replacment flapper mechanism at your hardware store for < ~$5.

Regarding the wax seal question...that's at the base between the floor (flange) and the toilet. If it failed, you would have water coming out from underneath your toilet.

good luck,

Dave

Yeah, they're a few hundred more (esp. if you upgrade to a 'smart' seat like I have), but it's money well spent, I say, as I plan to spend many happy hours atop it. >38 buttons, and no mention of a toilet self-cleaning button...??

Seeing things like this and imagining the engineering effort to produce it reminds me of how different the cultures are. Homongenization of cultures through improved communications has slower inroads in the bathroom I suppose.

On the other hand, I remember checking into a hotel room in Tokyo 12 years ago and seeing a pictogram above the toilet indicating that a person should not put their feet on the toilet seat and squat over it, as if it were an eastern style toilet. It made me wonder how many cracked skulls resulted in Japan after the introduction of a western toilet. For a company like Toto to have resources enough to produce such a thing tells me that toilet business must be good enough that old pictogram may no longer be necessary. Perhaps it was just a "Coffee is Hot" type of warning.

>It's a retalitivy new model. Made in the late 90's. The flapper working correctly, I replaced it a year or two ago.

I plunged it out, and it seems to be working a bit better. I'll rent a snake and ream it out and go down the vent too.

Yes, we have somewhat hard water here and cloging might be a problem to. I'll have to look at also.

You guys realy know your sh*t!

Thanks again everyone!
