>Leach's Stanley Blood & Gore lists all the standard and "special" cutters for the #55. I think they are in John Walter's book too. The cutter boxes should have paper lables that show all the cutters and numbers. I'm pretty sure any of the H&R's were considered part of the "special" sets. Sometimes you will see H&R's sold as complete sets. I'm thinking the last full set I saw at an MWTCA meet was $1000????

Depends

>Stanley changed the cutter sets over the years. New cutters were introduced and others were phased out. Purchasers always got four boxes of cutters and could order any of the phased out ones as well as the special ones. I have limited experience with #55 cutters, but the ones that I see (except for the plows) appear to have little or no use.

>Jim, I have a single long box that contains 52 or 53 cutters (one missing) as I recall. The box is labeled so I'm pretty sure it's original for the Stanley 55. Do you know if the single boxes may have been special order blade sets sold separately for the 55? I bought the blades long ago and haven't ever gotten around to finding a 55 plane.
What I have seen
jimreed@tallahassee
>I think most of the #55 blade sets came in the familiar wooden boxes with green labels. I have seen a more modern version where all four wooden boxes are stuffed into a larger yellow paper box. In addition, there were three special blade sets made for the #45 and they were packaged in the familar wooden boxes. As for the special cutters, I do not know how they were packaged. Perhaps it depended on how many were ordered. Maybe some Stanley tool historian will weigh in.

>This is the single box 10" long with 4 rows of cutters inside for a 55 containing 53 blades.
I spent so much on these a few years ago so that I now need to find the plane for about $5 to be a good deal.
Interestingly, the label on the back which lists the blades also states "Plane is accompanied by four of these boxes containing with the two in the Plane a set of 55 cutters". The label is a single piece of paper that extends nearly the full length of the 10" long box. I'm sure this is original, but sure is inconsistent.
I'd sure hate
