There are actually quite a number of us using holdfasts. I love mine and wouldn't give them up for anything. I use scrap between the pad/foot and my workpiece, especially if I am working softwoods. So far, I haven't wrecked anything. FWIW, I do not have a working vise on my bench anymore. I cut the shoulder vise off entirely and the tail-vise end is chronically buried to the point that I can't remember if I took it off or not. It's been a while since I've seen it. All that said, I would like a face vise of some sort, at some times. I think I'll run some aluminum T-track into the apron (so it sits below the surface of the apron) and use a couple of cam-action lever-thingies to hold boards for dovetailing. That's mainly theory right now because since I started working again I haven't had much shop time (4-6 hours in the past 3 months).

I still didn't get the time to read the "Aussie discussion", but you're right : trying to re-think something known from the scrap on is a good and necessary exercise. We learn at least why people came up with certain solutions.

If after a few years there'll be some sagging on the tail vise level, would it be a good idea to build it a way that can be disassembled for reparation ? Is that possible ?

It is comforting to learn that normal planing is possible on a tail vise. But of course I didn't think about grain direction in wood. A typical beginner's mistake ...

I can see your point about tail vises compared to shoulder vises. And sure, using metal hardware, you may fear less problems like distorsions during the use of a large vise. Would the technique shown on this drawing fix the problem ?

It makes sense. I would like to get the end cap on the bench top the way you can see it on the photo below, that is : connect them with a sliding dovetail, and add the front and back apron with dovetails. That should work, too, if I won't glue the back side apron to the top.

About the shallow doghole : I'm not sure about this, because my wood screw may be 20" long, so there is perhaps no point in starting dogholes after that :-) Besides, a dead doghole will fill with everything and is difficult to clean.

And I read of course Schleining, Landis and Sam Allen. And my collection of internet documentation is quite well nourished :-)

Ok, tell you what, if I really have to give up (nearly) all my cherished ideas because I finally understand that they were crap, then I'm going to reconsider the Tucker vise. By the way, you can do something similar also with a wooden screw. In Landis or Schleining there is a photo somewhere with a front vise attached to a bench by a hinge ...

So you don't like my U-formed tail vise either ! If I get you right, you consider "lots of useable rugged space along the edge of the bench" lost because you imply that one cannot work on the horizontal tail vise parts of may drawing. Well, I was told that hammering on them is indeed out of the question, but planing should be possible nevertheless ? And I'm sorry, but I didn't understand your sentence "I would install the double style on 2/3rds of the bench and the standard tail vise on the other third". Could you give me a drawing of that ? I'm really interested.

I agree that my 'integrated" front vise is not qualified for panel joinery like dovetails, but it should be for fixing little furniture ? Or what did you mean by "casework" ?

The frame of my bench is intended without glue at th back end, so the wood should be able to move. And I don't understand why dogholes in corners may have "minimal strength" ? Do you refer to the possibility of breaking out, due to a lack of wood at the corners ?

Ok about the "self-inflicted wound", that's a good expression for my integrated vise :-) And last but not least, I'll think about your idea of a bench with two different heights. That may be I could like. :-)

I want something special, and I'm ready to work, maybe to suffer for it. On this account, my "lust for perfection" is the base of everything I'll try with wood,workbench included. Forth, a simple bench won't give me the possibility to try different approaches of working wood. And I want to have the choice, even if I'll decide to discard certain workflows later : I must have experienced them before.

So thank you for your opinions, but on this I won't relent :-) Don't take that as an offence, though. You're welcome, of course, to give me other technical feedback.

You've gotten a lot of good advice. I'll give my opinion but first I'd like to ask a question or two. The first is: What is the purpose you envision for the integrated shoulder vise on the rear of the bench? As Dierdre pointed out, it is oriented incorrectly for the one thing those vises excel at - dovetailing. But you must have had a purpose in mind when you came up with the idea, and I'd like to hear it.

The second is related to the first: What do you see yourself doing on each part of the bench? I would love to hear about what was behind each design decision.

Now some observations and opinions. I'm not going to jump on the simplicity for simplicity's sake bandwagon. I am both an engineer and, like you, a musician, so I am biased in favor of the simplest elegant solution that does the job. Not everyone shares that view - some like complexity for it's own sake, and that's perfectly valid. But that's not me. And I also don't use machines - like you, I do everything including stock preparation by hand, and have been doing it that way for over 10 years. So my perspectives are those of a hand-tool woodworker.

A useful exercise for you might be to mentally remove one vise at a time and try to envision how you would do that kind of work without that vise. In looking at your bench, the first thing that strikes me is that there are too many vises. I also built my bench with 360 degree access, thinking that I'd use both sides of the bench all the time. It didn't happen that way. For one thing, it'e very inefficient. For another, it breaks your rhythm. One of the beauties of working with hand tools is that the work stays put and the tools move. And they tend to move to clutter up any bench surface that the workpiece currently isn't on at that moment. So, unless you're incredibly disciplined (which may break your rhythm), you will either find that you don't use the back of the bench very much or you are constantly moving things around on the bench to accomodate the need to move the work to the next "station".

Your design has handles and cutouts and vise faces almost everywhere, getting in your way as you try to work. You haven't left yourself a lot of surface to actually work on. Try this thought experiment: Leave only the two front face vises (the fixed one and the sliding one) and, if you insist, a Veritas twin screw vise as a tail vise configured in the usual way, i.e. not using the extended faces. Is there anything you couldn't do just as easily as with your design?

For myself, if I had the space for a very long bench (i.e. 3m or so), I'd go with the two front vises and a traditional tail vise - I've never found the need for a wide tail vise, though I have worked on wide panels. A single tail vise coupled with an appropriately clamped stop do the job very well to hold wide panels for planing, etc. If I didn't have the room to support a really long bench (I don't), I'd skip the tail vise altogether, and probably skip the sliding face vise. One thing I've learned in 10 years of using a bench is that building in special-purpose devices that enhance my ability to do one thing that I do every once in a while at the expense of (a) flexibility and (b) allowing me space to work, are a bad idea. Yes, it's a momentary hassle to clamp a wide piece for dovetailing with an ordinary face vise. But I don't dovetail all day long, and that hassle is more than made up for by not having another vise (or a single really big vise) on the face of the bench that I have to work around all the time. Again, if your bench can be 3m or more long, this isn't an issue.

I won't get into the argument of utilitarianism versus fine art in workbench design. Suffice to say that getting that first good gouge in your fine furniture style bench may be the best thing that could happen to your woodworking (after you get over the heartbreak, that is).

For me whether it is complexity or simplicity it needs to be "earned". Over-complex design or over-simple is amateurish. It's probably impossible to nail it perfectly, but the result needs to speak of real need or it becomes a sort of mechanical clutter. I do think the average modern amateur or professional has very difficult needs. In the guild days a worker often made very specific parts, but I make everything that strikes my fancy from canoe paddles to cabinetry, from boats to guitars. This makes heavy demands on my bench, but I find I can solve them with a relatively simple bench that has two vises.

Even non-power woodworking can be pretty noisy, hammering in particular. It's not my favorite kind of hammer for chiseling, but I started using the rubber carving mallet just because it is so much quieter on the ears.

Neither am I particularly, I have never unscrewed my Tucker jaws so they will hold angled wood, and I have had mine for 10-15 years. On the other hand I was carving a handle for my broad axe last night, so while I am not a carver flexible vises are an asset.

What is really valuably able the tucker is:

- Instant sizing from really wide to closed by means of one of two levers.

-Rotation, this allow you to use your body more efficiently by finding the perfect angle

-90 degree placement allow one to hold drawer sides, etc... in the vertical position without interference with the screw. also raises jaw height a little which is often useful

-90 so the jaws are flat with the top a very useful position for all kinds of work I probably use it 30% of the time in this position, whether cutting tenons or profiling edges. It's also a super useful position for attaching other workboards. Good position for Japanese sawing dovetails.

Tucker is expensive and I bought it more or less thinking I might return it, but it is the most useful holding tool I have. On the other hand if it was taken away I would still get by, but one can say that about just about anything no mater how useful.

It's personal, but I would cut out 4 of your vises if it helped with financing a Tucker. Obviously if you can make yours out of raw wood that is a lot cheaper still..

Way more useful than just the fact it is hinged, though that would help.

a bunch of issues:

- you have a wide rear vise operated by two screws, and you have 90 degree tracked elements on the tail configuration, so it is either pretty loose or going to be prone to binding.

- I don't see the advantage to the tail elements. A tail vise can provide a really strong vise area for stuff like tenons, but 2 of them? I'd rather have more supported appron/edge.

- it takes away a lot of stable edge from the bench, but that was mostly in connection with your top vise where the whole structure of the edge of the bench has been cut up, would be difficult to keep level and would need like 4 trestles creating a lot of underbench clutter.

- If the table top expands how do the two vises adapt to the widening in the top without further binding or loss of strength it would work if your bench top was all laminated like plywood, but not with a solid top without a ton of complex joinery, probably weak.

I think you will have quite a time keeping the top edge in plane, and with all the doodads flattening the grain running in all those directions will be a pill.

I'll do a scalled drawing on 35"x 96" for you. look at the bottom.

Cutting dovetails for the cases of cabinets, you need to be able to secure a wide board vertically. If you want to grab a piece of furniture you can get a lot in the Tucker.

Well I assume you know what you are doing and have something in mind relative to running the dark strips, like a picture frame around the bench. But depending on how it is done it will restrict movement or blow out. Often the corners are the breadboards if they are designed to move, and those elements are strong, but not strong as the dogholes in line. If you have some corner dovetails or miters I don't see much place for dogholes. It is just a sketch so I'm guessing at some of what I am seeing.

Well the thing is two benches probably make more sense but that robs the bench of "supper bench" attributes, so integrating it into one tells a more powerful story.

I feel I need a low bench for power work or really large pieces, and a high bench for detail stuff, narrow pieces and so forth. I really like the idea of bench that raises and lowers, except I really like benches to be all wood. I don't want my bench to suggest metal furniture or other products are actually better. I prefer a wood vise to a tucker on those grounds. However... I think there is something to be said for the Noden Adjustabench if it works as they say it does.

This vise style thing is not new, or specific to woodworking only. I was taught to tie flies right down to size 24 on my fingertips rather than using Modern unecesarry fly tying vises. I'm glad I can do it, but when I was tying for pocket money back in the 70s I used a vise. It's like having a 3rd hand and allowed me to use both hands more effectively. Same is true with woodworking. The guy with the vise never HAS to use it, pretty impossible to beat that edge.

The normal wood vise works pretty well. Wood has excellent propeties for this kind of application. The way they get around the various alignment problems was by creating elements that cotact each other at 90 degree: Thenon point into slot, cleat in secondary cleats at 90 degrees. This cuts in half the wood movement issues compared to the details you drew that I think are keyed side grain. I find the wood vise is nicer than the metal units some of which sound a like bucket of bolts when open. Others use plastic spacers and so forth to tighten the sliding mechanism. Tail vises are a fine concept tying two of them together is a little more complicated.

Wood movement wise, for no particularly good reason I made one of my benches like two separate beams with a crack down the middle that I can place things like chisels in. This kind of construction will allow you to mount two shoulder vises joined together since one can focus the wood movement int he crack area. If you don't want an open crack you can spline it.

1. My integrated shoulder vise cannot do what normally is done with, I understood that already. My original idea with it was to put in smaller, or partially built-up, furniture I wasn't able to imagine how to fixate it otherwise on the bench. Once I found a photo on one of the numerous websites dedicated on the workbench subject I unfortunately didn't download, because I'd have posted it here already to illustrate something very evident. On the photo you saw somebody working on a small frame of a chest of drawers, maybe 10" x 15" x 25". This frame was inserted vertically (with its 25" side) in his (normal) shoulder vise, and it was well in place because the vise's dimensions covered it fully. Well, you may say that a double-screwed front (or tail) vise lay be able to do the same if there's enough space between the screws. But I thought that a shoulder vise opens to the space, and if your furnitur has got, let's say 15" x 25" x 40", you still can use your shoulder vise to fix it on the bench, even if it stands out a little. Or you could use a benchslave if it stands out much !

2. So if I can hope my original purpose of the integrated shoulder vise may be clear, I'll explain the other vises: the two front vises down on the drawing were thought to clamp longer shelves vertically (I already know the second, relocatable one would hit my hip), and for the tail vise (let's call its horizontal parts on the drawing a and b, the vertical part with the twin screw c) I imagined several uses : with b (attached to c, of course) I would clamp longer shelves horizontally on the benchtop (with benchdogs), and if a shelve exceeds the bench's width, I coud use benchdogs on a and b (like the guy who's smoothing a tabletop in Schleining's book). With c alone, I thought to do dovetailing, clamping shelves between the screws, and without a and b.

Now, your arguments sort of sum up lots of single advises I already got here and there, but I appreciated especially the form you chose to comunicate them. And there won't be any heartbreak, I assure you, for I understood during the last days that certain ideas I cherished are simply bad. I'm glad you let me participate to your experience of rhythm, for instance, because this is evidently an aspect of woodworking I did not yet live.

I would be pleased to hear your opinion about a second, quite different benchtop project I'm going to post before long, with a new drawing. I'll call the message "Second try". Maybe several of your convincing critical statements won't apply anymore :-)

you convinced me about several weak points of my design, and I'm coming up with another, much simpler idea. This time, I'm not trying to have a screw for every task that can be imagined. I gave up the idea of the integrated shoulder vise, and though I'm not done with thinking about a bench on two levels, or one you could raise partially, I wanted to present this drawing to see if I understood your criticisms right. :-)

The only interesting detail may be a large tailvise (that's a leftover of my shoulder vise). Apart from that, it's a classical bench *sigh* on the bottom side and a jointer bench (?) on the top side. You must imagine a sliding bench jack on the top side, too.

What do you think ? Am I making any progress here ? ;-) Dimensions of this top are 8' x 32".

This is already much better. A couple of points: The tail vise would work better if the axis of the screw were lined up with or at least closer to the line of the dog holes close to the edge of the bench. The way you picture it, you will be asking it to rack after a year or two of use if you use it to work narrow stock like moldings. The second set of dog holes on the inboard side of the tail vise are not really necessary.

The second point I'd make requires you to use your imagination: Imagine the sliding vise from your earlier bench mounted on the "joiner's bench" side of your new design. Imagine it able to be removed and slid on and positioned anywhere along that face of the bench. Now ask yourself what you need the twin screw vise for anymore. The sliding vise not only provides all the functionality that the twin screw vise would give you, it is also completely adjustable, making the length of the bench the only limit to how wide a piece you can clamp in it.

Similarly, I would ask about the value of the crochet. As someone else pointed out, Roubo is very fashionable nowadays. But ask yourself what you need a crochet for if you have a face vise. In "The Workbench Book", Landis makes the point that the crochet could be more efficient for someone doing edge jointing all day long, that it would save him the trouble of having to loosen and tighten the vise. What nonsense! If you're jointing stock that is all close to the same thickness, loosening and re-tightening the vise will take less than one second. And who among us will be using a bench to do production edge jointing all day long, anyway? It's much better to avoid having things that stick out of the bench face and get in your way if you can.

What this all boils down to is that, in my opinion, your bench would be just as flexible and easier to use if you were to forget the idea of using the back face for anything, and just substitute your original two face vise arrangement (one fixed and one sliding) for the twin screw vise on the front face. Of course, you'd then have something very close to a traditional bench :-).

Please indulge me as I use a musical analogy: I understand that a modern composer wouldn't find it satisfying to immitate Mozart or Bach - those styles have been done already, and the composer's objective is to create something new, personal and unique. On the other hand, given a choice, most violinists would rather play on a great Stradivarius or Guarneri fiddle than to design their own fiddles with the objective of creating something new and different just for the sake of creating something new and different. This is true even when they want to play modern works on the violin. They know that the Stradivarius design has passed the test of time, and that it provides a robust and flexible platform for them to create their music on.

And, when a musician gives up a traditional instrument to play a radically new design, it is because either there's a deficiency in the old design that he's desparate to correct, or it's because he's tried some luthier's new design and find it actually works better than the old.

A woodworker's workbench is his instrument, not his composition. The pieces he produces on it are his compositions. This is why we take the same approach the violinist takes - we only depart from the tried-and-true designs for our tools when they either don't meet our needs or someone has shown us something new and we've found it to be better after trying it. At the stage you're at in woodworking, you'd do better to stick to the Stradivarius workbench design and figure out what, if any, limitiations it has.

Well, I'm thinking about the Tucker vise ... Problem is, in Germany you won't find it for 570 $ (that's Veritas price tag), but for 800 � (that means over a 1000 $) ! So you may understand why I'm hesitating ... Buy it directly ? Yeah, that would mean something like 700 / 750 $, much better, but even then ... And a Tucker would interrupt my all-wood-concept savagely :-)

Your analysis about my tail vise(s) convinced me throughoutly, so I gave up the idea. And your drawing cleared up the cryptic sentence with 2/3 (and so on). I had the idea of two different tail vises, too, but I can't see why one should employ a double screw tail vise with such a short distance between the screws. If they're going to be of wood, with a 2" diameter, this design would leave about 12" between the screws (without the use of dogholes it would be about 15). Wouldn't a single screw suffice in this case ? And tell me please something else. The piece of the other 1/3 tail vise that turns the corner doesn't finish on the edge of the bench, you designed a gap. I saw that gap on many photos. Could you explain to me why this is so ? It would be easy to build the frame adjacent to the apron, wouldn't it ?

I also studied the Noden Ajust-A-Bench products, but heaven, are they ugly. They may work fine, no doubt, but I couldn't use such things, sorry. On the other hand, I understand now your concerns about the corners of my bench. It is true that I imagined box joints or dovetails to be the connection between the boards the apron is made of. Now, my dogholes happen exactly at the center of those joints ! That's surely bad, but I cannot see other solutions, because if I want the distance between the dogholes of my vises and those of the bench to be as near as possible, I can't just postpone the bench's dogholes behind its apron, that would cost me nearly 4 inches ... Do you have an idea ?
