First, what are you looking for the plane to do? Chamfer edges? Trim ends? Smooth? Flatten? Joint? One plane can't do everything well, so you need to focus on a particular use, and then buy good plane that's suited to that use.
In my opinion, Lee Valley makes some of the best reasonably priced planes currently available. They're not cheap, but they are well worth the price. You may want to go to their web site, and peruse their offerings.
