Awesome week and wekend...gloat!

Steve Kubien

>Afternoon everybody,

This has been a great week. I've managed to log in a metric tonne of evening shop time. Whilst listening to the Maple Leafs lose in glorious fashion (few things give me greater joy) I have been puddling away at my first Welsh stick chair. I've never used a drawknife or travisher before (minimal work wityh a spokeshave). Man, this is a blast!!! I have never had this much working with wood before. Smooth surfaces left on white oak that I wouldn't dream of sanding or scraping. The legs and short sticks are done. I have begun to saddle the seat with my homemade travisher. More great fun (the work and the travisher). I made my own iron and while I am only using the pine I glued up for the seat, it is working like a charm. Travisher is based on the moose-eared pattern in PW a few months ago (maybe a year ago by now). I'll use the elm for the next chair(s). Now for the gloat.....

I am employed again!!!!! Through various emails and meetings and conversations I have managed to procure full-time employment with one of the leaders in the handtool world; a certain manufacturer and retailer from the Ottawa Valley. Looks like I may have to test drive some of the bevel-up planes soon.

All in all, a great week. If the ladies in my life weren't sick with colds and the flu, it would be absolutely perfect. Damn germs and viruses.

Thanks for letting me share (not the germs).

Side question of the above-the-49th-parallel northerners here: in a nation that is generally quite conscientious about its grammar, why the Maple Leafs rather than Maple Leaves?

>Sheeesh! Seems to that you just joined us a short time ago as a very rank beginner and now you're bucking your way up to Robs chair! Man o

man if that dosen't warrent a ultra-mega YOU SUCK x ka-jillions and ka-jillions nothing does!

GOOD ON YA'!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully Rob will have a packet of Sniffing Salts handy at alll times at least for the first 6 months to bring you around when you pass out from the over-load of goodies.

Also, be aware that excessive drooling can cause sever dehydration so carry pleny of water with you at all times, you may even want to consider getting one of those Camel Backs which is a water bag that you carry on your back like a backpack.

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh!

You could have picked a better company, but I guess LV will have to do... Does this mean I can get a discount since we're such good friends? ;^)

Maple Leafs? Is that a girl scout group? Real Men play rugby (union rules, of course). :)

>Cripes, Steve, you're getting a move on with that chair all of a sudden. There I was coasting along thinking I was way ahead of you too :~( Congrats on the job; you sucketh mightily. Inventory control? So will it be you we can complain to if something's out of stock...? ;~)

>Well, you can complain at the new downtown Toronto store but I suspect you would deal with Ottawa for the most part. Yeah, the chair is coming along. I've got the saddling done. Now it is time to shape the bottom and start boring the legs...later this week.

Cheers,

So, where're the chair pics? I wanna see the travisher, too. What sweep iron did you get? And are you finishing with the travisher? Sounds like you're having fun. Congrats all 'round.

>Many congrats Steve! - I can imagine the relief.

I've thought the same thing about the Leafs - of course, any nation with such sports oxymora as the 'Utah Jazz' or 'Los Angeles Lakers' has little room to cast stones ... (Admittedly, the accuracy of 'Utah Choir Music' or the 'Los Angeles Dry Gulches' is no improvement.)

>Steve,

Congratulations on all of your news (except the colds, of course).

Glad to hear that the chairmaking is coming along. I have to agree with you that using a drawknife and spokeshave on green wood is about as fun as it gets.

I didn't know you were a Red Wing fan. ("Whilst listening to the Maple Leafs lose in glorious fashion (few things give me greater joy)").

Keep posting about your chair progress! I really enjoy the updates and it inspires (kicks me in the butt) to go out and do the things I want to do in the shop!

>Not to worry about the new boss Steve. I heard from VERY reliable sources that he's at a trade show and won't be back until the 13th. He also supposedly has very limited access to the internet during this time. But then again, you can't be too careful. He's fooled us before.

Congratulations on your new job.
