It came with my 45??

>I bought a 45 and this piece came with it. I know the metal part is a depth stop, but can anyone tell me the purpose of the wooden part?
I almost tossed it thinking it to be a user made item, then saw the exact same piece in a photo of another 45 on auction. Must be for something, right?

Assuming you have a wooden box, the wood piece is part of the box itself.
The metal part looks like it's a depth gauge for the sliding section.

No I don't have a box, well maybe I have half a pasteboard box, they tend to look all the same. Should I keep this part/piece or toss it?
I tried to fit some of the accessories and can't figure how they mate to it either. The stop has been in the wood since day one, judging from the shiny patina of the shaft covered in the wood.

>Dave, there's no sense in throwing away a piece that appears to fit somehow or another. You may find for sale an empty 45 box someday and discover this block fits just right. Who knows?

>I have a couple boxed 45s and none of mine have this piece and I have never seen one in any, but Stanley made many different 45 boxes over the years and I could see where a particular one might have this piece. Sounds like it is a factory piece to me and probably something that often got lost pretty quick.... Ain't going to cost you nothing to keep it is it, eh?....Todd

I would think that it was an owner made piece to house the depth stop. Also it looks like a light colored wood like white pine or maple. Original wooden "Forty-five" boxes were made of Chestnut.

>The wood is the same scrap they made the cutter boxes from, light in color and weight, piney looking but not in grain. Like I posted at first, I saw an exact duplicate of this wooden piece in a photo for another 45 on the e auction site. That makes me believe it was a factory supplied piece. Looks like it could seperate the skate and the fence from stuff. The plane is a SW era, don't know the type , can't find a site for that.
