Two Joinery Question for Craftsman End Table
Sanford
>Hi everyone. I am building a craftsman style endtable, the kind with side spindles and a bottom shelf. I have seen lots of pictures of these tables, but I have not seen any real craftsman furniture since I took up woodworking, sigh! I am wondering about the joinery in two spots. Is there a more or less authentic way to do these things? First, how should the side spindles be attached? These will be about half an inch square and I was thinking of just cutting half inch mortises for each one and sliding them in, but it might look better to cut a little tenon on the end of each spindle instead. Is there a standard craftsman way to do this? Second, how would the lower shelf be attached in a real craftsman table. I was thinking about runing a long mortise along the lower stretchers and cutting long tenons on the lower shelf, but a simple dado with the shelf stuck in would work too. Is there a standard way to do it in craftsman furniture? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Sanford
