Cadmium plating?

Dave Thompson - Champaign IL

>Ok, Christophers comments on cadmium plated H&R tools has got me curious. I guess I was only aware of nickel, chrome and jappaning as common "platings". What, why, when, and who did cadmium plated hand tools?

Any other unusual metals?

Thanks,

Dave

>hehe...quoting the sticker on a Cadmium plated 044 I have, it reads:

"The Ministry of Supply Order 1951 No. 1048 prohibits the use of Nickel Plating on Planes, and an alternative Metal Plating is now used."

From my understanding, Nickel was scarce in WW2 in Britain so other materials were used, cadmium being the most common choice. Someone else may correct me though if I have something wrong.

>I think someone once told me that refrigerator metal racks are cadmium plated, and there for old ones should never be used as substitute grill grates because the heat would give off toxic fumes. I never checked it out so it may or may not be true.

>Even pre-war Record used a "rustless" plating on the plough, 405 and combination planes which certainly was not nickel and most likely cadmium.
