New Lie-Nielsen from Wood Show - Update
John Weber - GO BUCKS!
>Update from earlier post about a LN No. 6. I was all set to pick up the LN No. 6 at the Wood Show today in Columbus. But things didn't go exactly as planned. I bee-lined for the LN booth and quickly had then No. 6 in my hand. Felt great! Deneb Puchalski was doing the demo and his sister was working the booth. The number six would fill a void in my "collection", so it was high on the list. Deneb quickly directed me toward a No. 8 as a more useful plane since I mentioned I was considering that as well. He then went on for over an hour demonstrating; flattening, sharpening, and general plane use. Deneb is excellent and gave me tons of pointers. I have some "form" issues with the larger planes and the pointers were very well received, and I look forward to working on my technique. He also had some great tips on sharpening and uses the basic Charlesworth method I use.
So now I'm convinced I would like the No. 8. I needed to grab some lunch and meet up with my Dad and Uncle so I decided to let the purchase settle a bit. On my return I spoke mostly with Denebs sister (sorry I didn't get the name - but she was very friendly and helpful). Herself an accomplished woodworker, she had plenty of pointers and ideas to answer my questions from before lunch. Since I already have a No. 7 we discussed how the No. 8 might be redundant. And I might be able to exchange my No. 7 for and 8 if I would prefer the extra mass and size. So I was back to looking at the No. 6. As we discussed the bench line, the 10-1/4 caught my eye. While I had not really been considering it at the time, I picked it up. It felt great, nice weight, and the hinged knob and tote made holding it very comfortable. After a little more discussion, I said I'll take it!
So after several hours most of which was spent at the LN booth I have a new 10-1/4 on the way. I think it made the most sense as it will add some capability, and just seems like a very well made plane. I still wouldn't mine adding a 6 or 8 at some point - maybe next year, and appreciate all the comments earlier. I hadn't done any research on the 10-1/4, but after checking it out, I don't think it will disappoint.
As for the show, it was a little slow this year, deals were few, but the seminars were very good and my "lessons" at the LN booth were well worth the trip.
Thanks again - John
