Planning curly birch

John Edwards

>All,

A few days ago there was a post on what Garret Hack considered the most diffcult wood to plane.

His answer was curly birch

The picture attached is a Sauer & Steiner 22 1/2" jointer. .0035 mouth bedded at 47.5* Nice thin shavings and no tearout on curly birch.

A happy customer.

>I believe that I was the one posting Hack's comment. If I recall properly I mentioned crotch white birch, not curly (which would still be a challenge, mind you).

How much did that plane set you back, if I can be nosy?

>You get the double "YOU SUCK" award...

Those sure are lovely. Could you give me (us) lowly plane users a comparison between the two? Do you like one better than the other?

Is that a Jet bench?

tommy kipling

>Kind of ironic that you're running billion dollar planes on a Jet bench. I didn't realize that they could cast wood in Taiwan too. Neat.

>Makes sense...curly birch is pretty tame stuff from what I've seen... nice and cheap here in the MD-VA area, too.
