Rest of Nibbling Chisel also known as plane irons
Phil Smith
>Bill mintioned below that he sent the nibbling chisel out for heat treating when we have an order sufficient for treating. Well here is most of the rest of the heat treating order.
Early last year Wiley Horne inquired if we were interested in making some CPM 3V plane irons for infill planes. Well here is the result of that initial request which would up with long infill plane irons and a couple of plane irons for a LN 4 1/2 for Wiley, and short infill plane irons for Steve Elliott along with some plane irons for LN No. 4 1/2 and for a No. 5 bench plane and couple of plane irons for wooden block planes for the guys in East Tennessee. Most of the machine work was done by a machinest friend Burce Norton along with some outside work at a local machine shop for initial blanchard grinding to rough thickness before heat treating along with finish grinding on the surface grinder after heat terating.
I had posted pictures of the irons earlier before heat treating and surface grinding.
The irons have all had the initial bevel ground to about 27 degree and are ready for finish honing of the back and honing of the bevel.
We also made 4 irons out of CPM M4 tool steel which should give us a significant bump in performance over the 3V. They are currently out for finish surface grinding. I will post pictures of those at a later date. Next step is to make a couple of irons out of CPM 10V to see if we can get another bump in performance over the M4.
Below are pictures of the short infill plane plane irons back side. I will post additional pictures of the other plane irons.
