Boxes made for Christmas Presents *LINK*

Brent in Southern Ontario

>This is my first post on this forum. Thought I would show some pictures of some boxes that I made for Christmas presents this year. Two identical boxes are made from lacewood and padauk, one from walnut and maple and one from walnut and olivewood.

These are my first projects with hand-cut dovetails.

Thanks for looking.

>Hey Scott,

The hinges are basically just a box joint (or finger joint) with the fingers rounded over. I cut mine by hand but you could use a finger joint jig on the table saw or router table.

After you have the joint cut, put it together and then drill through the fingers to make the hole for the hinge pin (I used 1/8 maple dowel), preferably on a drill press. Now round over the fingers. I did this manually with a sanding block. On the hinge leaf that is inset into the lid, round over only the bottom side of the fingers - by leaving the top untouched, it acts as a stop for the lid (the lid will open to just past 90 degrees).

I attached the hinge by insetting one leaf into the lid and them I pinned the other leaf to the back of the box with dowels.

Hope this helps!
