I think his book is not quite as analytical as I would like. I would prefer to see a book that showed different designs, then discussed precisely how each bench accomplished a set of basic operations. It would have been nice to examine the variety of joints used, try to evaluate them, and maybe discuss top stiffness.

In terms of writing though, I personally don't care if people agree with me or not. My only goal is to be read and hopefully considered. By that measure, Landis has been very successful. His book has facillitated many excellent discussions and inspired many craftsmen. For that we all owe him only praise.

But I'm still going to sling mud his way until he joins our fold here and stands up for himself! YOU'RE A COWARD LANDIS!!!! COWARD! COME BACK HERE! I'LL BITE YOUR KNEE CAPS!!

As a result of the many thoughtful responses to this request, I think I've got an idea of how to proceed.

But as interesting as this discussion has become, I'll leave the search for the "Holy Grail" of workbenches to other pilgrams!
