Jim Shaver - workbench question

Greg Earley

>Hi Jim

If I may ask a question?

I was looking through the shop shots at workbenches and came across the bench you built.

On the Bench Dog Holes, mine are the same rectangle design, did you make the holes straight up (perpendicular to the work surface)or angled toward the vice end. My plans call for 4 degree angled dados. Any input would be great.

I need to stop working on this bench and start on the Ark, we are getting alot of rain in the SF area. Totally saturated.

Thanks

Greg Earley Calif.

>Hi Greg,

I have been watching your weather, looks very wet!

I angled my dog holes towards the tail vise, about a 3 degree pitch.

Thanks for your kind words about my bench.

Take care,

Jim

>Hi Jim.

Where can I find details on the leg bench bottom nut? I'm about to cut the leg on my workbench to accomodate a leg vise. One other thing: what homemade finish did you use?

Nice bench.

>Hi Les,

Thanks for your kind words about my bench.

The lower parallel adjuster you mentioned was part of the order I made with Howard Card when I bought my other wood screws for the bench. I followed the Shaker bench plan-outline in the Workbench book by Scott Landis (Taunton Press) a great deal in making my bench. I do not remember what I paid for the adjuster , but it was very reasonable and Howards work is very good.

My home made finish is BLO based with 1/3 BLO, 1/3-1/2 Thinner and the balance being poly. I only used that finish on the case work, the top was straight BLO.

Take care,

Jim

>The bench in the book was taken from Norm Vandal's. Norm used leg vise hardware he found in some tool cache or other. (He can find the neatest stuff!) His leg vise had a metal scissors apparatus to maintain parallel adjustment. I've never seen or heard of another like it since.

>Hi Greg

I too saw that bench and leg vise in the book as well.

I used the wood screw and adjuster that Howard card made. His work was authentic to the shaker bench depicted in the book and detailed in the appendix drawings.

Take care,

Jim

>Jim and All thanks for the input.

I didn't get a chance to reply a thanks this week I was sent out of town on travel.

I'm going to go with the angled bench dog holes.

Can't wait to finish the bench.
