Norton water stones
Moses Yoder in White Pigeon, MI
>I still clearly remember seeing the Shapton stones demonstrated at the wood show in Novi a few years back, and deciding that some day I would have a set of those. I have been using two inexpensive combination stones, using one with a 900 grit side and another with an 8000 grit side. I like the water stones because they are easily kept flat and cut fast. My stones are getting pretty thin after about 4 years of use, so I started looking at the Shaptons and realized I would need to spend a pile of money for the stones plus another pile of money for the lapping plate to keep them flat. Then I saw the big water stones from Norton in the Lee Valley catalog, and decided those were going to be the stones for me. Yesterday morning I put them on my "wish list", figuring on saving my money for the next two months and then ordering the stones.
Yesterday afternoon we went to my sister's house, and my wife happened to pick up their little dog. You have to understand my wife likes dogs more than I like tools, so we had 5 dogs yesterday afternoon when we left the house. Now since my sister was looking for someone to give her dog to, we have 6 dogs. I of course pretended to be slightly outraged at what the dog would cost to care for, and the fact that we already had 5 dogs and no need for another one. Then waited for just the right minute, and said "I guess I'll be ordering those stones then tomorrow, right?" It worked fine. Knowing the LV service, by the end of the week I will have 3 great big new water stones. Now I'll have to make some boxes to keep them in. Looking forward to years of very sharp tools.
