Am I crafty or what? He he...

Denis Chnard, Orlans, Ont.

>We (my family) went to visit my BIL who lives out of town, to spend Boxing Day away from the temptations of consumerism... Since he lives far away we stayed overnight.

A few years ago, when my in-laws moved from their house to a retirement home there were lots of stuff that they were getting rid of. One of these things was a tool box that belonged to my BIL's grandfather. There were a bunch of old rusty tools in there, and it seemed that these were going to the trash bin. I quickly salvaged that box and brought it home.

I eventually went through the box, and cleaned the tools in there. Among the tools was a Stanley #6C, a Millers Falls #85, and a Millers Falls #4 bullnose plane.

Now, since we were visiting my BIL, it seemed right to bring some kind of a gift. I've always felt uncomfortable to have "inherited" these tools when they're in fact his ancestor's. Add to that the fact that he has limited means, and he never buys a tool unless he has no way to make one by himself. So I gave him the Stanley. He was extremely happy to receive the plane, and I felt that justice was done.

But now, I don't have a plane longer than a jack, that's an unacceptable situation, no? I see a jointer in my future...

>That was pretty darned nice...the sentiment, the work and the consideration.

I'm sure your BIL will treasure the tool.

>Good Evening Dennis,

My #6 is probably my favorite plane, and mine came in less than pristine condition. The wood was in pieces, but most importantly, the sole had deep dings and gouges which actually created ridges which were proud of the sole surface. I accepted the plane in lieu of partial payment for a job I did for a poorly funded friend. At the time my #3 son was a student at Williamson Free School of the Mechanical Trades, and Ken had a room mate who was in machine shop. I asked him to lap the sole as a school project. The school loved ptrojects like this because it helped the students prepare for real world challenges. I learned later that they had to repair the lapping machine wheel nefore my job could be addressed. So my request resulted in two tasks: repair the machine and lap the sole. Once lapped, the job would be okayed by the machine shop instructor and evalutated buy the carpentry shop instructor. I couldn't believe the job they did. The sole was so polished that I could see my face in it. And flat! I re-japanned the body and created a new tote and knob. Its my favorite plane.

>I liked mine too, but somehow I felt wrong holding on to something that belonged to someone else, just because they didn't see the value in that plane at the time. I have all of my great-grandfather's wooden planes that "survived", and would be peeved if someone else had them...

That plane was just a big honking piece of rust when I got it. I ran it through electrolysis, then cleaned it, flattened the sole and the frog, tuned the cap iron, and honed the blade. It probably works better now than it ever did at the time. One nice thing about it is that the tote and the knob are in pristine condition.

My BIL called tonight about another WW issue, and thanked me again for the plane. Makes one feel good...
