Bedrock Cap Levers

RichStevens

>Hi there,

I think I made a fatal mistake the other day when buying a Stanley Bedrock 607 on Ebay. As usual I got caught up in the last minute 'should I or shouldn't' bid syndrome and decided to put in a low ball bid thinkin I would be outbid and outgunned. Jeepers, I won it.

Hmmm, I checked it out again and then realised why - the cap lever says "Stanley" rather than "Stanley Bedrock" or "Bedrock". Should've read the fine print eh?

Right now I'm thinkin I got myself a cobbled up plane. It looks OK to be a darn fine user, which is what this baby will end up being ... but it would be nice to know that it had all the correct parts on it for the sake of autenticity and resale later on.

I have since gone back on previous sales of Bedrocks on Ebay and noticed that planes with bedrock cap levers tend to go for very big bucks. BTW, I paid $137 for this 607 earlier this week.

For you Bedrock guru's out there, what are your views please? Were any Bedrocks sold with "Stanley" on their cap levers only?

Thanks and Regards

Rich

Of course

>All Bedrocks after 1923 had lever caps that only said STANLEY and are the identical lever caps as on the regular "Bailey" planes. While I don't know when your plane dates from I bet it is the original lever cap.If it is a sweet heart era plane it probably should have the plain Stanley lever cap. I've never noticed that the older Bedrocks with the Bedrock lever caps go for all that much more but suppose they could. I do think the Flat Top [post 1911] ones go for more then the older round top ones unless they are in collector condition as I believe most users like the flat top ones.....Todd

Check this out - Ebay 6237499292

RichStevens

>Todd,

I was hoping I'd hear from you - thanks for the reply. Your comments are consistent with the age of the plane

Check it out on Ebay - the item number is 6237499292.

I'd be keen to hear what you think, especially its approx age.

Type 7 o r 8

Todd Hughes

>The single patent date like on your plane didn't come out till the type 7's in 1923 [when they also started to use the plain Stanley caps]. In 1931 with the type 9 they stoped having the patent date. The difference between a type 7 and a type 8 [1927-30] is that the type 8's have made in the USA cast into the bed.

Plane would have gone higher if the seller had cleaned it up and took better pictures and described it better. Is hard to believe that a seller wouldn't take a few minutes to clean a plane like that up but it did result in you getting a bargin I think.Didn't look like the plane saw much use and I bet it will clean up fine........Todd

>Found a Bedrock cap and blade set for a 602 at an estate sale once. It hung on my pegboard for a long time. Finally decided to sell the thing, since I knew I would never find the plane to go with it. It sold on eBay for $235 + shipping. (I paid $7 for it, plus a couple nice 4-square chisels and a Disston #70 backsaw). -Wayne

Re: Type 7 o r 8

>Hey Todd,

Can I assume from your comments then that I have a plane that is authentic for the period it came from?

With regards to its condition, I hope there are no serious defects with it. I have taken a huge risk buying it with only two small images of it.

I once bought a Bailey 03 (again at the last minute on Ebay) only to find that it had been grit blasted previously to clean it up. The guy didn't even bother removing the tote and handle when he did it. Got it for $25 though.

Thanks for your advice.

>The risk factor is why the plane went so low. Like Todd says, if the seller knew tools it would have been a different story. But a lot of these are the best buys on ebay I think; ther really is nothing worng with them usually, but not many peoplea re willing to risk the hassle and wasted money. you probably just got a very good deal.

P.S. you suck . I really need a 607, too. But I guess a 608 would do.
