>Hey Les. I would suggest getting a copy of the Workbench Book by Taunton Press. There is a section on installing a similar vise there. It seems the welding part of the vise will save some setup time achieving a good non racking fit. Good luck...L-N hardware has a good rep.JR

>Les, I have one of those vices also. Have you phoned LN to ask for instructions? I think we should bug them until they provide instructions. In particular, those bolts with the cap screw need explanation. I assumed they were used to bolt the handle end onto the tail vice, but when I looked at one of the LN benches, those bolts were used to attach the tail vice plate to the bench body.
As far as I can tell, the LN hardware is the same as this hardware at Dieter Schmidt: Suspiciously similar hardware at Dieter Schmit
There's some installation examples here: Installation examples but the details are a bit sketchy.
If you manage to get hold of some good instructions, make sure you pass them on to me. I'm just about ready to install my vices.
Thanks,
Steven

>I had a chance to see one of these vices installed on a LN Bench. I took a few pictures, which might help.
First, here's the overall tail vice assembly:

Here's a shot of the end of the tail vice - looks like a big hunk of wood just glued onto the tail vice. I didn't really like how this was done on the LN bench, so I plan to do something different, including dovetailing the end on. The end of the vice was almost 4" thick on the LN bench.

This is a shot of the front of the tail vice:

And another shot of the front, showing how the vice assembly slides over the plate (the plate in not recessed into the bench):

Here's a shot of the doghole spacing used on the LN bench:

Here's a shot looking up as I layed on the floor. The handle end of the vice is to the left and the front of the vice is to the right. The two capscrews bolts were, I think, installed at the upper right of the photo. You can see that the bench top was recessed to give access to these bolts. You can also see the two tabs on the front of the vice hardware which are recessed into the wooden bits. You need to plan your doghole spacing so that the screws, which go through those tabs, don't end up in a doghole.

And here's a shot looking at the rear of the vice. handle end of the vice is to the left and the front of the vice is to the right.

Here's a shot of one thing I didn't like about the LN bench - the handle sticks up above the top of the bench, which could in some cases interfere with long material. I couldn't find a way to design around this on my bench either.

And, for what it's worth, here's a shot looking inside the vice. This shot is looking from the handle end towards the front end.

Hope this helps,
Merry Christmas,
Steven

>Did an article a few years back that has a real good tutorial on mounting one of these. I believe it was a 2002 issue, but I'm not sure. My copies at work where I spend my lunch designing my bench. I won't see it untill 2006. Good luck, take lots of pics to show off your creation to us!

>Very nice write up. I never would have thought to take the vice handle height into the design of the tail vice. Great info & thank you!
Scott, back to the drawing board...again.

>Thanks everybody. Nice photos, Steve. Thankyou.
Do you recall how wide (in to out, front to back) the entire assembly was? I'm gluing up my top and I'm figuring to leave a cutout 6" from the front of the bench to the back wall of the tail vise (where the flat plate gets screwed in. Thoughts would be appreciated.
Merry Christmas gang.

>Hi Les, you could scale off the fifth picture...looks close to 6".
On my bench it will be 5-3/8" - this is a bit of a function of the thickness of the boards you are working with.

>Les,
Am I right or am I not seeing things correctly, but I see it has the screw itself stays staionary and the vise ride back on forth on it via the tab that it goes thru? If so than what/how is the end of the screw captured?

>Your bench is the Hoffman Hammer Bench that Highland Hardware sells and use to be sold by Laguna Tools.I bought mine about ten years ago
and the handle does not sit up above the bench on mine.It came already together, all I had to do was put the top on the legs and tighten up the bolts.

>The tab that the screw goes through is attached to the bench, and is stationary. The screw travels back and forth through the tab, moving the tail vice with it.

>Thanks Steve, I'll have to take a closer look at this. Looks like a good idea to me. I worked about 2.5 years to make my tail-vise worhk the way I wanted and wish I had toght of this idea.
What I did was have my rod "captuted" in a blocked of wood which attaches to the face board and the movable jaw.
Now that I have a digital camera :~) I'll have to try to post some pics, but you guys know me well enough to know that it'll take me until July to fiqure out how to do that. :~(
