Qustion about #45 Combination Plane

One question... if you have the sliding section pushed totally against the main stock should the two "skates" front and back line up totally even and "touch" pretty much the whole length of each skate, both in front of the throat opening and behind it. While there is no indication that my 45 has been dropped or anything, when they're pushed together the skates IN FRONT of the throat meet first, leaving the skates BEHIND the throat slightly apart. The cutter aligns behind the throat where it "beds" against the main stock. Because the skates don't line up perfectly, the "nicker" or "spur" won't align even with the edge of the blade, but rather slightly INSIDE the edge of the cutter. Hopefully this is clear to the reader...
Is this a problem, or am I expecting too much from a 45? Any answers will be appreciated. I can describe the problem better if needed. Thanks.
