popular woodworking hand tools edition

frank shic (walnut ck, ca)

>i was doing some grocery shopping last night when i stumbled upon chris schwarz's most recent effort to CHAMPION the cause of hand tools. have you guys read this thing yet? it's a great compilation of previous hand tool articles that covers everything from sharpening all the way up to tuning up planes and hand saws as well as simple jigs like the basic bench hook/miter block.

two of my FAVORITE lessons from voraciously reading last night until this morning are: there's no SHAME in using a sharpening jig and HAND tools and POWER tools can co-exist together quite nicely (wish i had an 8" jointer like chris!).

BTW, if anyone didn't get the last joke rob lee made about chris schwarz, there are a number of wonderful pictures including: BEARDED chris, CLEANLY-SHAVEN chris, EIGHT year old chris and AFTERNOON SHADOW chris!!!

learnings....

>"no SHAME in using a sharpening jig and HAND tools and POWER tools can co-exist together quite nicely"

for this insight you needed to read the magazine!? Have the "dark" forces of the Hand Tool Forum had no previous influence? =:)

Actually I found out the hard way that there is an exception. A grit-shedding power grinder is most definitly not a good neighbor for hand tools. It now lives where the opportunity to embed grit in lumber is far removed.

>bill, the DARK forces have been screwing with my brain recently to the effect of "GEE, why don't i just build everything using ONLY hand tools?!?" but i swat it away mentally and remind myself, "you have a WIFE and TWO daughters who are very NEEDY and HATE my time in the workshop!" i'll hang on to my power jointer and planer for now, ok, guys?

recent experience along those lines

bill tindall

>I'm making some bellows (FWW #72, as though I don't puff enough hot air on this forum). I had to clean up and flatten some dinky 7 x 12" pieces of chestnut for the wood parts. Too cold to go to the lumber shed and fire up the planer, I thought. So, inspired by all the hand tool experience shared on the Forum I set about to smooth and size these pieces with what has become a good stable of basic hand planes (which typically are used for fitting). The experience removed any doubt about abandoning power tools so long as I stay mainly motivated to getting things made. The pure hand tool approach takes too much time to learn and its too slow for the number of things I want to make.

But I have come to understand that for some the journey is as important as reaching the end.

Do subscribers receive this edition?

Jamey Amrine

>I saw it on the newsstand, but have not received it yet. Last month, my first issue arrived about a week after it hit the newsstand. I thought when i saw it on the newsstand that my subscription must not be starting for another month, so I bought it. Then it showed up.

Funny enough, I let my FWW subscription drop and bought the Tools and Shops issue thinking that my subscription was done, and it turned out that was my final issue. So in one month I messed up and had doubles of both. The PWW example shows how eager I was to read Adam's article. :)

I am resisting the urge to spend the money on the Handtools edition not knowing whether I should expect it in my mailbox in the next week.

Duh! That'll teach me....

Jamey Amrine

>Went to the popwood.com site right after leaving here and read:

"This special issue, available only on newstands or from our website is a comprehensive compilation of articles about Hand Tools. 76 Pages of Sharp Advice help you improve your work, and upgrade your skills. "

There you have it. Guess I'll hit B&N on the way home tonight.

>Don't feel bad Jamey. I did the same thing a few times. I'd see a new issue of Pop Wood on the stands, wait a few days for my sub to arrive then buy it. Next day it's in the mail. Problem was, I was not receiving every issue from my sub. So, I didn't renew my sub and just buy it at the news stand now.

funny you should mention that!

frank shic (walnut ck, ca)

>bill, i was super GUNG-HO when my ebay stanley scrub plane showed up in the mail. after regrinding the blade (it had been formerly ground SQUARE) i started furiously scrubbing away at a piece of scrap pine until i hit a knot, and then another knot, and before long, i was sharpening the blade again! 1 pass through the planer would have probably done the job although i'll admit that it would have been much NOISIER!
