Guide to Stanley chisels

G Crocker

>Hi Yall,

(New here and still finding my way around -in the future I'll make my posts shorter).

A couple of folks over at Sawmill Creek suggested I try this post here-

Today I picked up a bevel edge similar to a #750 but marked "D". I can't find any info on it.

I've ran across several Stanley chisels from time to time and can't find much info on them, either. My copy of John Walters' guide to Stanley tools shows 35 or so different model numbers and sets ranging from #20 through #766. The only ones I ever read anything about on the Web are #720, #750, and the Everlasting series. Most of my search hits on the Web simply point to chisels for sale - little or no info there except for prices.

Where do yall find your info on Stanley chisels?

Good Questions

Todd Hughes

>The big Walters book has a chapter on Stanley chisels and most are given dates as to manufacture etc. but still a good bit is left out I think esp. on some of the later chisels.

.... I have heard that the D on these chisels stands for Defiance , stanleys cheaper line of tools. Sounds good though I do not know, I used to think maybe it stood for Defective but I have seen many with no problims that i could see. I have had a few everlasts marked Imperfect but have never seen a Stanley socket chisel marked such.

.....Would be interesting to learn more about these chisels I think....Todd

>For what it is worth, below is a picture of some of the Stanley chisels I have. Each one has a different stamp on the socket. From left to right the stamps on the sockets read: Made in USA, Stanley Made in USA, Defiance by Stanley No. 1250 Made in USA, Stanley No. 750 Made in USA, Stanley D Made in USA, Defiance Made in USA, and Stanley 720 Made in USA. The shape is nearly the same on each. Obviously, the 720s are longer.
