Block plane magic

Jack Guzman from Maine

>I have a friend who isn't a woodworker,or particularly handy with tools at all.We share a love of old blues. He called me today and said he had a plane he got years ago and wondered if I could show him how to use it.He came by this afternoon with a cassette of different versions of an old blues classic done by various blues men, a poster of Furry Lewis(a legendary blues man),and a rusted up made in England stanley block plane of modern manufacture.I got it apart, cleaned up the rust(no pitting luckily)and polished the sole and sides a bit.The blade had never been sharpened but was ground concave.I don't mean hollow ground but concave as in holding a ruler on the edge there was light in the center.I reground it and sharpened it at 30 deg.and then put a microbevel on it with a 6000 grit stone, oiled the blade and adjustment screw, waxed the sole and put it back together.

I put a piece of pine in my vise endgrain up and showed him how to hold the plane and sliced off some clean shavings. Then I showed him how to bevel the edges of the wood and let him try it.He spent the next half hour planing that piece of pine down to a stub by alternately end planing and beveling. He thanked me and said he was headed home to play with his new toy.He said he has a couple other planes at home he's going to bring up for me to look at.

I wonder if I've started something. One can only hope.It sure is fun sharing this stuff anyhow.

Yes, I believe

>First thing that popped into my mind was the line from the song

I can hear it now, "Do you believe in Magic (in a yong girls heart)

Maybe the words could be changed to "Do yu believe in Magic in an old rusty tool" eh?

Ya' never know Jack, you just may have started another poor slob down the Slippery Slope. :~)

Magic, Magic, all sing along. "Do you beleice in Magic....."

Coarse there's also Olivia Newton-Johns Xanadu that refered to Magic as well didn't it?

Yes Jack, I believe in Magic ;~)

Tom Sontag - St. Louis

>Yessiree Jack, you seem to have done the deed. However, and be advised I speak from experience here, I suggest you let him rehab the next one, with guidance. I found myself spending my shop time rehabbing other peoples flea market finds. Once to show them is my new rule.

Good work.

>Jack,

That can turn out quite differently. First your blues man can turn into a woodworker - over the years. That would surprise me seriously. I hate it but I'm so negative ;-)

Second he wants his stuff to be well fettled and knows about your reputation. No way it has come to little luxembourg, state of Europe ;-) that you have capabilities and knowledge.

In both cases, I'd be at my guards and do not put hope on something so well looking (sorry, english ain't be my mother language ;-) ). Know the man for what he is for you: sharing blues with you. I've met several people interested in my wood passion. At the end they all wanted something done in wood. I mean that's great, but they didn't want to valuate that, only have.

So now I read the posts of the fellows before me only now and I have to agree with them. I think you'll find better friends here. Tell me please if I'm wrong, it would spend hope.

Hope you got it well with the hoop in the morning.

Regards from Luxembourg -5 degrees and clear in the early morning 2.41 am (dont know in Fahrenheit)

Speaking of old proverbs

Bob Hackett(Mainely,Bob)

>I used to tell the new recruits the old chinese proverb:

"I hear and I forget

I see and I remember

I do and I understand"

I told them the common goal we were all reaching for was to understand. In order to reach that goal you can coach but thier own hands had to do it.

I find that proverb applies to alot more things than just basic training.

Glad to hear you`re giving folks a push there brother.

>what's up with that? You post a nice picture like that and don't say word one about it. That's CRUEL! ;~)

I also spy with my little eye what appears to be a LN, and tell us more about that chisel and hammer.

Love the sawhorse, now that's a sawhorse! Clydesdale right?

What counrty are you in?

Stay warm.

>The beam is european oak. The picture shows for what it is. My largest woodproject till now.

The sawhorse pair is shop made. It has the right height to put on alone some oak beams of 6m length bei 10 of 24 cm section. I don't know Clydesdale. Maybe you have a link for me, Todd?

The chisel is an Ioroy 42 mm with boxwood handle. The hammer is japanese to, built for japanese chisels. Both work great together, even in this green oak. The LN is a 5 1/4.

Some European 'unity' - European 'pocket' states.

Conger - the Irish diaspora in Munich

>Marc... nice to see you here... we normally meet somewhere else!

That looks like a cool project. Did you do the construction planning yourself?

-g-

To Todd O... Marc lives in Luxembourg... right in the centre of Europe... Luxembourg is one of Europes larger 'mini-states' (less than 1000 square miles). Luxembourg is one of the original kingpin founders of what is now the European Union.

Btw... Europe has some 13 'pocket' states, and Luxembourg is one of the LARGER ones! Take San Marino (pop. 29000) for example. This independent state is less than 24 square miles!

Clydesdale

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>Clydesdales and Percherons are the two major breeds of draft horses - horses bred to pull wagons and do similar heavy labor. I'm not a horse person, but our county fair has the occasional draft horse, and I've got to say, they're impressive. Standing next to one, I feel like an eight-year-old. They're BIG.

Clay C in Miami

>Marc, I hoped for a more 'wowza' picture, but this will have to do - here's a Clydesdale next to a (pretty good-sized itself) thoroughbred horse - Your sawhorses are indeed saw-Clydesdales!

Bill, Neal, Clay, thanks for showing me a Clydesdale. Knew only Shire horses.

>I always loved what were called the principalities when I was taking junior high and high school geography, and always did my semester reports on one of them when I could get away with it.

More recently, I was intrigued to discover, when we implemented our administrative computing system, which is designed for multinational companies (not that we are), that Andorra uses (or used - I suppose they use Euros now) both Spanish and French currency.

Bill, fantasizing about visiting the little countries when he finally gets to Europe - Andorra, Lichtenstein, Duchy of Fenwick...

>Is THAT what I have to look forward to? As I walked out of the Transfer Station Swap Shop I saw a guy walking in with a tackle box, rod and reel. I did an about face and asked him if he was getting rid of it. He said he was, and "the box is full!" Oh my wasn't it! And now that I'm going to start fish'n there was about a hundred lures, lead'as and a box of about 70 Flys, flies? Having also found a Fly Rod and a couple reels I my start there.

A man who finds enough gear will teach himself to fish or at least keep his feet cool.
