>Well, the shavings made by a properly cutting gouge or skew are just like planing without a depth adjustment screw. I try to turn the dangles so that they don't need to be sanded. The globes usually have a ridge or two that needs to be smoothed with a bit of sanding. I'm not good enough to simply turn them both smooth and round.
The wood at 6 and 12 oclock is Eastern Redbud. It looks like olive, but much softer. Others are cedar and sasafrass, which looks like chestnut, but the shop smells like root beer.
