>You know when I fisrt heard this "quote" I was very doubtful about it. If for no other reason you are being asked to believe a man was saying that his job was basicaly not needed and that it [and him] was obsolite. Just sort of kind of not the way that most people tend to act. Even if they do believe it they sure don't make speaches saying it! .....Anyway have found several cases where others have investigated [going all the way back to 1940] this quote and not only have not one case coming out of anyone knowing where it was actually said but rather by all acounts it appears that Duell was a strong proponet of inventers and the patent system and never gave a clue that it was no longer needed.....Here is one link to some of this....Todd

Urban legend, eh?

Denis Chnard, Orlans, Ont.

>We learn something every day...

That quote was pulled from the manual for SHAZAM, an econometrics package. Each chapter in the manual has a "prediction" quote that looks silly now, from economists and non-economists alike, just to show that it's not only economists who make erroneous forecasts...

Here's another one:

"I think there is a world market for about five computers"

Thomas J. Watson

IBM

1943

Thanks for the heads-up,
