>I purchased a plane from the "other guys"... A LN 60 1/2...
I feel as if I cheated on my wife, basically all the planes I've purchased in the last 10 years or so were from LV...
Rob Cosman is quite the showman. Somehow I found him a bit less abrasive and arrogant than usual yesterday. I also got to try their jointer, that's a very sweet plane... He even managed to take a whisper-thin shaving out of a piece of end-grain maple with the jointer, impressive! But at $475 USD I think I'll pass...
Back to the block plane. As Cosman was getting set up to sharpen a blade his wife asked him to do mine at the same time. Very fast, no jigs or anything, Charlesworth back bevel, 30 seconds and he was back in business.
I went back to our association booth and gave the plane a try on the end grain of the block of beech I had brought for Frank D. (whom I had the opportunity to meet, great guy). I was disappointed. I had to push the plane hard, and somehow the end grain didn't feel all that smooth. Since I was manning the booth at the time I left it at that.
Later, during a break, I walked back to the LV booth and tried the Veritas LA block plane on some endgrain maple. The plane felt as good as the LN IMHO, and worked better. Mmmmmm....
After getting home last night and putting the kids to bed, I went back to the LN plane and took a good look. Mmmm, no lateral adjuster, that means I'll have to be extra careful when honing the blade square, as there is a bit of side-to-side play for the iron in the plane, but not much. Then I did something I should have done before but had not, check the blade itself. I trusted Cosman in his claim that 30 seconds was all that's needed to go from "new in the box" to flawless performance. Well, I guess it takes a bit more than that, as the blade was dull. I mean, I couldn't shave hair off my hand with it. I think I can get it sharp in five minutes, but the freehand honing and the Charlesworth back bevel, I think I'll pass for the moment, I'm not that confident in my abilities... 30 seconds is probably OK to touch up a blade that's already sharp, but a new blade takes more than that IMHO...
Until I get the blade surgically sharp I reserve my judgment on the plane, but right now I'm under the impression that I paid 50% more than for the Veritas LA block plane, without the benefit of better performance...
Oh well, I guess that since I now have planes from both brands I will appear more credible in my expressed opinions :)

I also purchased Cosman's dovetail DVD, quite instructive. But unlike him I won't skip the test-fit for a while...
