A new bench *LINK*

William Claspy in Cleveland

>Hi Guys-

I've recently (nearly) completed a new bench for my humble shop. I've written up a fairly detailed description and posted a couple of pictures on my web page, link below.

Still on the to-do list for the bench is boring holdfast holes, making a half-dozen or so bench dogs and deciding if I want to add the sliding dead-man.

I have benefited greatly from the wealth of workbench discussion that has occurred on Woodcentral, and would like to thank all of those involved. I tried to internalize and make use of as many of the great suggestions offered here, tempered by the use and construction and alterations of my old bench as I grew as a woodworker.

Cheers!

Bill

>Bill, that's a nice looking bench. Good, clean lines. You're going to like the thick top. Mine has a 4" thick top and it is rock solid. It makes a huge difference in how the bench "feels" when you have to put some muscle into your work.

Great job.

Nice bench Bill...

>Interesting top layout Bill.

Does the bench move or rack with the leveling feet?

Is that a tail vise or something else on the far end of the bench?

Nice looking bench.

It was the best work-around to the materials I "inherited", and it worked out just fine!

Does the bench move or rack with the leveling feet?

Not even a little bit.

Is that a tail vise or something else on the far end of the bench?

You are seeing the not-yet-installed or -finished cover plate of the end (tail) vise. I'll likely add pictures of that end of the bench once the end vise is completely completed :-)

Nice looking bench.

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with it!

My previous bench was 3-1/2" thick laminated pine, and I would agree. Thick is good. Thick hard maple is even better! :-)

>Nice job, Bill. I especially like the way you have managed to build memories into your bench.
