Woodie follow up and eBay question *LINK*

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>I stopped out this morning and the low-angle woodie I mentioned yesterday (see link below) was still there. It's not in as great shape as I remembered - the abutment for the wedge on one side is broken off, though the wedge still wedges (see below), and the iron's a bit rustier. Still, an interesting design. The mouth is more of a tunnel, with the vertical part of the mouth opening at the front being a good 3/4" back from the actual opening, so the wedge is still operative, since it wedges in the tunnel.

I may clean this up a bit and throw it up on eBay to see if there are collectors who think it's valuable. Is it likely to move better now or after the holidays?

Some more details

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>The iron is, indeed, at about 30 degrees in the plane, and it's skewed about 5 degrees (measured from the centerline of the sole - measuring skew on a coffin body turns out to be tricky). The iron is stamped, as best I can read it, "D R Barton, Rochester ..." with "18--" in the center; the last two digits are, respectively, either an 8 or a 3 and either a 2 or a 3 or an 8. So, forged in 1830's or 1880's. No visible maker's mark on the body, though the toe is moderately beaten up, so there may have been at one time. There's a peculiar hole in the heel centered vertically and horizontally and running into the body (parallel, that is, to the sole and running forward), a bit small and rather deep for a striking button - ?

The iron is sharpened to be used bevel down, which sure wouldn't leave much clearance sharpened at 25 degrees.

Interesting plane - it's intriguing to see how much engineering went into a block of wood and a chunk of steel.

I think before the hollidays would be better, it could make someone a great gift.

I'll try

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>but we've got my bro and sis-in-law, and the boys, showing up on Thanksgiving, just-moved-to-California cousins of my wife's on Friday, a trip down to Oakland for more cleaning out of my parents' house on Saturday, and exhausted zoning out on Sunday. Still, if I'm going to put it up on the Bay, I need to take pics anyway.

Does having multiple pics improve the odds of a good price, or is a thorough description better? And can I save money by putting up one pic and mentioning that I can e-mail more pics to serious buyers?
