LN Leather Tool Roll

Dan Clermont in Burnaby

>Anybody know what kind of Leather the LN tool roll is made out of? It almost felt like a suede.

Had a hard time keeping my mitts off it when at the local woodshow. Want to make a roll for some chisels, shaves, and guages which I can them transport to my workplace where I seem to be getting commisioned to do more and more woodworking. Nice change from Electronics

I know other companies make similar rolls but that LN roll was pretty sweet

Cheers

>Dan,

I don't know anything about the L-N leather roll, but Lee Valley has several (leather) sizes that are of top quality. I have purchased three, all very reasonable in cost.

I have one.

>I don't know what kind of leather it is but it is some kind of very supple split hide. I totally agree though! Their tool roll is a treasure in itself, let alone what's in it.

>I have a few LV nylon tool rolls and I find them very good, there are a few pockets that are really handy, and they seem very well-made too. And they are dirt cheap. I wouldn't use leather for my chisels, it retains humidity and if there's a spill involving water it will make your tools rust a lot faster. Leather is five or six times the price and not as functional.

>The leather tool roll that came with my L-N chisels certainly has not prevented them from getting rust on them. For long term storage and for working out of, I think a wooden toolbox with a tight fitting lid would be a better choice, and it doesn't take up as much valuable room on the bench top. The leather tool roll also attracts shavings, chips and sawdust. Leather tool rolls are for jobsite tools, and I prefer to take the bluechips out into the cold, cruel world.

>I have to agree with you Dan it is hard to keep ones hands off that soft supple tool roll that comes with the LN chisels. As a matter of fact I'm currently curled up with my chisels and tool roll right now having acouple of drinks and enjoying a nice afternoon in the shop.

Dave

P.S. I belive its just split cowhide

>Never thought about the moisture issue and the plan was to place the tool roll in a box with the planes and saws

Think I have some hemp fabric around somewhere from my Brother's store. Will have to look although it is nowhere near the same as the soft supple leather on the LN tool roll

Cheers

>I remember a post (wrong term of course) in FWW from the early days about not using leather in high quality gun cases for that reason. Something to do with the method of tanning.

>Dan,

Not quite a shirt but L-N has an apron made of leather if you had to have something wearable.

>Chrome-tanned versus veggie oil tanned, IIRC. I used to keep framing chisels in chrome-leather tanned holders made from the barrels of some old Frye boots (don't you miss the '70's???), but would squirt some camellia oil onto the leather every few weeks (or after working in the rain).

The LN leather work is done by a small firm in France - I have the roll (from a first 100 set - don't think I'd have popped for it separately) and the LA block holster on the tool belt - both are nice, although I ended up sewing the cover back over on itself to form a sturdy loop for the belt.

I do use the LN wrap when I work outside the shop, but always spritz the blades with camellia beforehand.
