>Time was "jigsaw" referred to a stationary tool, similar in design to the modern scrollsaw, except that the blade was spring-loaded, pulled down by the tool and then pulled up again by the spring tension. Many of them could also handle a stiffer blade that was held only by the chuck at the bottom, for coarser cuts where you didn't want to take the time to thread the blade through the hold and fasten it at the top. Blades were then "saber" blades, referring to the sword.

"Saber" or "sabre" saws were the little hand-held electrical tools that held similar blades to "saber" blades.

However, the terminology fuzzed over time, and now what I think of as sabersaws are commonly called jigsaws.
