>what is this press used for? picked it up at an auction don't know why it weighs a ton ie is 10X14" under the press and will open almost 4 inches any ideas of it's use? It's in great shape the screw is 5 TPI acme. Well what do I have?

It's primary use is pressed flowers for SWMBO

>Bookbinder's "nipping press," used for many things (sometimes just to set paper folds into place over a day or two) but mainly for applying even pressure on the text block, cover boards, and cover material at various stages as they are glued up into books. Binders call the vertical clearance "daylight."

Yours looks like a really nice, clean one. If you don't have a good use for it, offer it to a local library or art school...

I use it to keep sandpaper in My dad use it to flatten pictures. Workes well for either.
