Bit box - okay, I couldn't stand it.

Skip in Falls Church

>I'd gotten a set of bits earlier this year along with a couple of braces and haven't had a place to put them. I kept seeing the (I think) Russell Jennings boxes (the three boxes in one) of bits advertised on eBay as dove tailed when all the ones I saw were box joints. So I decided to try and make one of the fancy boxes like the Jennings bits come in - only with dove tail joints.

I had some 3/4" butternut from some time ago that I'd intended to make some boxes out of - but of course never had. I don't know how well it will hold up because it's a little soft - but then I don't think I'll be dragging it anywhere outside my shop. I decided to make up the box in one place and then cut each box loose when it was done. In the lay out I allowed 1/8" for the two cuts I'd have to make and that proved more than adequate. I let the ends of the rails into each end and anchored them all with a couple of screws from underneath.

I used off the shelf brass hinges - but I hadn't gotten any hasps or clasps. I didn't see anything locally that I was happy with and I didn't want to wait on an order. So I looked around and found a piece of brass sheet left over from making the chair devils and a piece of ebony left over from the spoke shave I made, both just a little bit longer than the box(es) are high. So I decided decided to make my own out of ebony and brass. I used 1/8" brass rod as pins. So now I have a place to put my bits. :)

Once again....very nice!

Dave (Arlington, VA)

>Hey Skip -

Thank you for posting those pics. Yov've been doing some great work....leather work, hand tools (new and "upgrades"), and now tool storage. All very cool. We may have to convene an area Gathering of the Galoots just to admire your recent work. Your work both motivates and intimidates. Great work. I appreciate your posting.

I'd been keeping the bits loose in a cardboard box, obviously not the best thing to do. Since I had to come up with something permanent the solution seemed to be a box - and I thought the challenge would be fun. OTOH keeping it away from my wife (the boxaholic) may be even more challenging. :)

No problem

Skip in Falls Church

>It's as simple as I could think of - although it's not as simple as I'd like. The ebony is epoxied and screwed to the brass from the back with #2 1/4" brass screws. Again, I managed to break the last screw and, no, I didn't have any steel screws that size. :(

>Hi Skip -

After Thanksgiving is a good idea. Things get pretty hectic here around the holidays. I haven't heard if Dave Anderson is planning on making his here-to-fore annual trek down to Williamsburg this January, but that might be a good time.

I'll email Dave before too long to see if he knows what his plans may be. I also recall that some times it has been challenging for you to get time off work...so we'll need to be flexible.

I'll let you know - off-line - when/if I hear back from Dave A.

>I'll be headed down to Williamsburg again in January and suggest Saturday January 21 for breakfast at Bob Evans. I expect to drive as far as Philadelphia on Friday and spend the nite with a friend in Haverford. 9AM as usual????

>Love those latches. Where do you get all the time to do all these cool projects? I guess it's a good thing mine came in a box, 'cause I'm still working on spokeshaves...

Very good job on your box.

>Hi Dave,

I saw the date Dave posted (1/21/06) and it looks like I'll be on days again. Well, I guess I can always take a bit of vacation. Shift work can be a bit of a drag some times. OTOH I get to stay up all night half the time at work. Um, that is a *good* thing, right? Wait, now I'm not sure. :)

Yes! They seem to be very happy in their new box. And I was finally able to throw out the cardboard box they've been living in the last few months. :)

>Thanks Scott!

I'm glad you like the latches - they were a real pain to make. Especially since I had no idea if they would work. :)

Where do I get the time? I started on this box *before* I started on the spokeshaves I made. (Some times my projects just need to um, ... "ripen"(?) a bit - I guess.) Of course I live in a townhouse with no yard to speak of, have no kids at home and a wife that just loves anything I do and doesn't care how long it takes. She burbles over anything I do. She was demanding to know when I was going to get pictures of this box up before I'd even finished it.

>Hi Skip -

I didn't know what your work schedule was (or would be), and I know that has been a challenge in the past. I hope you can make it. As I've already mentioned, I would love to see some of your new work in person. Looks like Jim C can make it too. He might like to see those apple saw handles!

It's gonna be fun.
