Planes from the UK

Dave Thompson - Champaign, IL

>I've been noticing alot of good e-bay prices on Record planes in the UK. I won a bid on a Record #10 1/2 for what I thought was good deal, but with $45 shipping, it became a pretty average price. I was seriously contemplating a nice Record T5, until I got wind of the shippng costs. Even a little 043 was $18 for shipping. I'm told surface mail is only slightly better price, more restrictive on weight (which seems odd), and may take 6-12 weeks.

Have shipping rates recently gone up from UK to the US? Granted, in the past I've only done overseas purchases on a couple of shaves and small rabbet planes, so my past experience is limited to only with small stuff.

I'm a big fan of Preston and vintage Record planes, both of which are in relatively short supply in North America. Anybody here found a method for getting these fine tools to North America?

>Many of the big tool meets (MWTCA and PAST for example)will have one or more British dealers with tables or rooms. Tony Murland has been at a number of these and there are others. I've picked up both the 043 and 044 planes that way at what I thought were reasonable prices. It's not unusual to see British planes in Fine Tool Journal, both in the regular sale part and in the auction part.

>Thanks Bill. Yes, While I haven't been to many, at a previous MWTCA I went to, there was a vendor from the UK. They had some good deals on used bow saws...

I was at the national MWTCA last month. Noone from the UK that I know of was there, but I did pick up a very much unused/very nice 044 from an Irish Canadian.

>I think its the UK post office trying to improve its profitability. Its not now possible to send anything surface above 2kg which I cannot understand at all. You would have thought the heavy stuff ought to go surface. It seems our prices for shipping are more expensive than elsewhere as for many other things.
