Saying Good-Bye to a Veritas LA Block Plane

Hoa Dinh in Alameda

>Last night, I sharpened the LA blades for my Veritas block plane the last time. Soon, it's no longer mine.

Afterward, I gave the plane a good coat of wax, put it in the plane sock, wrapped it in bubble pack, and placed it in a box. The extra HA blade, the front knob & tail ball, the chamfer guide, all cleaned and wrapped in bubble pack, joined the plane later.

I looked at them the last time, then taped the box, and wrapped it carefully.

Then on a piece of paper, I wrote down, "Happy Birthday, David." and taped it to outside of the box.

Yes. Today is my son's 10th birthday. He still doesn't know that I'm taking off from work at 1:00 and will show up home with a cake.

I'm not sure who's happier, he or I.

Hope he (and you) have a Happy B-day.

>Hoa,

Be careful you don't spoil that kid! You should have given him an antique Stanley - then you could have called it a "plane old gift"!

Just kidding :>)

>Hoa,

That is an awesome gift. He'll probably cherish that plane above all others. Whenever you post about David I read it to my 10 year old grandson hoping it will inspire him to spend more time in my shop. You both are lucky to have each other.---Jack

You should see...

Hoa Dinh in Union City

>his face when he opened the box and saw the plane. His smile was worth a zillion $.

He had used the plane before but the plane imediately went back into a drawer in my workbench when he was done. He'd always wanted one to call his own and even had it on his Christmas wishlist.

After the little birthday party, he cleaned up a drawer in his workbench for the new treasures. I gave him a little lecture on bevel-up vs. bevel-down planes, and how he should match the cutting angle with the material. The next lecture (probably Sunday) will be how to tune the plane and sharpen the blade.

It was fun.
