Questions about LA planes (... a bit longish)
Felix B.
>Currently Lee Valley has several LA planes and I am a bit confused when it comes to their purpose. Since I don't do much of the hand jointing, I am not looking at LA jointer. Three planes that I am curious about are LA Jack, LA Smoother, and Bevel-Up smoother.
I gathered the following from the LV's description:
LA Jack is great for shooting boards, end-grain work and smoothing. The blade is 2.25" wide; 3/16" steel and has 25 degrees bevel. Since it sits on 12 degrees bed the blade angel is 37 degrees. It's a bit big (15" long and just under 6 lb).
Bevel-Up Smoother is described as state-of-the-art pure smoothing plane. It is the plane to use for the final finish on surfaces, especially woods of difficult grain patterns. It comes with bed at 12 degrees, same 3/16" steel blade as LA Jack, but it has 38 degrees bevel making the cutting angel 50 degrees (York pitch). The blade with 25 degrees is also available but optional. The blades are interchangeable with a LA Jack with makes it nice. The plane seems to be heavy, almost 5 lb.
LA Smoother - "It is used to smooth large surfaces. Similarly, with its generous side wings, it is ideal for shooting miters. Finally, it is excellent for end-grain work." It comes with a bit narrower and thinner blade (2" wide and 1/8" thick), beveled at 25 degrees.
To me, they all sound almost the same; where the LA smoother is a lighter version of bevel-up smoother. Or is there a key feature in each of these planes that I am missing?
I work mostly with hardwoods (cherry, wallnut, somer oak, some maple). My current surface prep work is done by #4 and #4 1/2 Stanleys with LN and HOCK blades and chipbreakers in them, I am having difficulties to decide which one whould be a good choice in my situation? And question number two - am I going to gain something that I don't have with my current setup?
So far I am leaning toward the bevel-up smoother with an extra LA (25 degrees) blade.
Thank you very much in advance for your input on this serious matter!
