Ramped Shooting Boards... What's the point?
David Charters (Durham, NC)
>Hi everyone, I am hemming and hawing and fixing to make a shooting board. I have been reading everything I can about them and trying to figure out how I want to make one. It would be easier to make one that is not ramped, but I don't mind the extra work. The more I dig in, the more I don't understand the point of ramping it. It's not because of the skew effect reducing the effective cutting angle because the edge of the blade is still going forward at 90 degrees. Sure it's probably easier to start the cut at the angle, and it spreads the wear on the blade out, but it also limits the size of stock you can shoot. Is the payoff really that big to make it worth it? I know that might be a personal question, I just want an informed opinion from people who may have tried both. Opinions from bored galoots who have tried neither are also welcome...
