Flea Market find

Joel Oswald

>Hi

I got an old backsaw today for $5, its a brand ive never heard of before. I did some research on it, and its a Woodrough and Mcparlin, the same company that did the famous panther saw. But I cannot find any info on their backsaws. On the blade is inscribed: Woodrough and McParlin, Ohio Saw works, Occident, W&M, San Fransisco, Cast steel warranted. The medallion is also really interesting it has like a balance on it, and those things on ambualnces, the snake around the staff and a sword, and on the medallion is enscribed: Woodrough and Mcparlin, Juncta Juvant, Cincinatti. Anyone know anthing about this saw? If you want, i can take picture if you want to see it.

THanks a lot

>Hi Joel,

I have no information to offer you concerning the maker.

All I have to offer is a hearty "You Suck"!

What a great find. Top notch one.

>Can't say either as I know to much about the saw company, but just wanted to say if you are going to keep on doing things like this don't bother posting them on here. You will only increase the number of posts saying "you suck". Which of course is only said with the best of intentions, with small flecks of foam at the edges of our mouths, and that wild far away look in our eyes.

>Woodrough & McParlin made saws, etc. in Cincinnati from 1857-1893. They were "aquired" by the National Saw Co. on behalf of (guess who??)....Disston, in 1893. The name continued to be used into the 1900s. BTW...they made the famous panther head saw. I too just recently found a W & M backsaw in a local antique shop (along with a Bishop backsaw)...both for $5...beep -Wayne Anderson

>Well, geez, Wayne...you suck too!

I live in old tool h*ll. A good day for me is a saw to rescue, and I might find one worth it every month or two. Once in a blue moon a plane of some sort--which I'm tired of fixing up.

Now saws...that floats my boat.

Good find!
