Union No. 8 restoration

Paul Erickson

>I have a Union No. 8 that I am wanting to restore. It is missing the threaded stud for the depth adjustment, and the adjustment wheel. Anyone know where I might find these, or does someone have a complete frog that they are willing to part with?

Please note that this has the normal Stanley style of adjustment. Not the vertically oriented threaded stud as seen on other Unions.

Thanks in advance.

cheers, Paul

Perhaps

Jim Reed@Tallahassee

>you can get a junker #5 Stanley and scarf the parts you need. After Stanley bought Union they used up the remaining parts (mostly castings), so yours may have had a Stanley screw and nut from the get-go. Good luck.

>Hi Paul,

Are you looking for a Stanley #8 frog or screws? Or are you sure you need the Union version.

Last I checked LV sold some Stanley parts

Good Luck with it.

>That's interesting. I have a plane marked "5A" on the toe, I assume it is a Union 5 1/2 equivalent. It has a stanley frog and iron, and I can't say for sure it is not the original...

>Not sure if this is the case, but if Union was true to form in copying Stanley's example, a #8 has a 2 5/8" wide blade. A #8 plane is the only Stanley plane to use a setup that is this wide, so my suspicion is that you will specifically need a frog from a #8, not from a 5, a 5A (whatever that is) or a 5 1/2. A 5 1/2 is 2 3/8" blade, which is still 1/4" away, unless it's like the early stanley 5 1/2 planes, in which case, it uses a 2 1/4", so you're 3/8" too narrow. 4 1/2, 6, 7, all use 2 3/8", too.

So you probably need a #8 frog.
