I forget the proper name for this, but what it is for a brace, and is used in boring holes in large beams. The tapered end goes into the chuck, a auger bit goes in the other end, the chain wraps around the bean your are boring, and somehow this set up "pulls" the auger bit thru the beam.
I see them on e-bay all the time, but never seen one used.

This one looks like a Millers Falls [717-719] or a goodell pratt and should be marked on the chuck. A very common tool, the more rare [and desirable!] ones are the dedicated examples where the chain drill is mounted permanatly on the brace or breast drill....Todd
