Plane Value?

Mike G. in SC

>A friend has given me a plane and asked me to give him a ballpark figure for it. The plane is a #5 size metallic plane by Ohio Tool Co. The only marks on it are on the iron: Ohio Tool Co. Columbus, Ohio, USA, Auburn, NY. and under that what looks like an owner's mark(?) HAR-MAC. I guessed about $15.00, but he wasn't too happy with my assessment. So I told him I knew some experts and I'd get back to him. Thanks for any help.

The plane is in good condition and I believe it has Rosewood knob and tote.

>A lot of people hear how much some planes sell for, so they think if they have a plane they are holding some sort of gold mine. The $15 is about right on for the plane in my opinion. I bought a pretty nice condtion Ohio Tools #4 size smoothing plane for $5 this summer. It might sell for a little more or less on the bay, but it is a pretty common plane.

Condition, condition, condition

>On these common planes, the only ones that sell for any kind of a premium are those that are litterally show-room-new. If it includes the original box, then the sky is the limit. Ohio made a few fairly valuable planes, but from your description it isn't one of them. If it has a frog adjusting screw, and patent date of 8.20.07 cast behind the tote, then it is a so-called Ohio Bedrock, and could be worth up to $100 in REALLY good shape. Check out ebay past sales, as has been suggested, but don't get your hopes up.

>If I was buying it I would expect to pay $5-$15 and if I was selling it I would want to get $25-$35. This is figuring it was in very good condition with wood with no problims etc.

I would tell your friend since it is his plane he is selling for him to tell you what he wants for it. Sounds like he had a figure in his head if he thinks your offer of $15 is to low....Very very hard to come out ahead when you make an offer on somthing you want to buy....Todd

>Thanks for the responses. I forgot to mention that it has a corrugated sole, but it doesn't matter. I already have a Stanley #5 of WW2 vintage and really don't need another one. (Man, I can't believe I just said that.) I think my friend just wanted some validation on what he paid for the plane. I don't know, but I'm sure it was more than $15.00.

Thanks again, Mike G.
