Grain direction for corbels

Paul Benton

>Hello,

I'm making some kitchen shelves that will have corbels and I'm wondering which way the grain should run as the corbels are structural helping to support the shelf not just cosmetic. Looking at other pieces around the house that have corbels (amorris chair & a hutch) the grain would run perendicular to the shelf - is that correct?

thanks paul

>Yes, the grain should run long, vertically. Ideally, though, in a one-piece corbel, the grain runs on the bias, slanting out and upwards towards that which it supports. Corbels also may be assembled from two members to step and support upwards and outwards, and architecturally, originate from within the wall.
