Dan Clermont in Burnaby
>We had our local woodshow in Vancouver this past weekend and it was allot of fun.
Not much in the way of hand tools although Lie Nielsen and Lee Valley both had booths along with a collector who was selling off some pretty sweet tools including lots of English infills, Bedrocks and the like.
As usual Rob Cosman was very entertaining and his demonstrations usually clogged up the aisle and when he did the presentations in the seating area it was standing room only. Rob demonstrated his Dovetail technique, mortise and tenons along with his usual impecable surfaces on the most stingiest woods such as Birds eye maple and quilted maple (he also got nice ribbony shavings on eastern maple end grain which was pretty cool). His booth was really busy all weekend long. Rob also had a small Mahogany chest of drawers he built and has a video out called "Drawer Making - the Professional Approach". These drawers had a piston fit and the air swooshing out of them was amazing when you closed it up. I picked a copy up and see the video is now up on his website which is at the bottom of this thread.
Stopped by the Veritas booth and they had the BUS along with a #6 and scraper plane. You were allowed to play with the planes and make some shavings on some maple. The guy at the LV booth is a good friend of mine and very quick to answer questions. Allot of my friends were pretty disappointed in the fit and finish of the LV planes and bought LN's instead. I did see a guy trying to decide between a scraper plane and a BUS but didn't stick around to see what he bouth
The guy selling old tools had allot of nice stuff and his prices were reasonable as well. A friend bought an Norris A5 Infill off him and had the iron swapped. I think he is going to have to file the mouth open to get the blade through curious to know what he thinks about it as he is very picky with his planes.
Their were less people selling nice wood compared to previous years which was rather disappointing. One young chap had allot of beautiful quilted maple and I took a chance and chose to wait until Sunday closing to buy some from him but lost out as it was all gone. Next year.
Here is a pic of my haul. I picked up a LN 8, LN 140, LN 97 1/2, LN Mortise chisel and Rob's newest video. The LN 8 is to die for as it drives through everything and I am so hapy I held out for the 8 over the 7 or the Veritas version. The LN 140 was absolutely gorgeous and my Christmas gift from my wife. The 97 1/2 is a tool I plan onusing allot for glue remaval and the mortise chisel had been Back ordered for a long, long time and finally arrived just before the show.
I am seriously broke after this show. But I have no regrets and am already saving up for next year.
